Tardy Policy

There is a four-minute passing period between classes. Students are determined to be tardy if not in the classroom when the bell rings for class. (Some teachers may require students to be in their seats; this requirement will be supported by the administration.) Students may be assigned work detail or be suspended for habitual tardiness. When a student has earned a second tardy, a parent must accompany the student upon his return to school the following day.

5th period class determines a student’s lunch shift.

The school cafeteria operates for the convenience of students and not for profit. A trained dietician plans the menu to meet the needs of a growing child. The cafeteria is located on the east end of the 1st floor. Student must present ID cards for scanning at lunch.

Breakfast Lunch

Regular $ .30 Regular $1.00

Reduced $ .15 Reduced $ .15

1. The campus is closed to visitors at lunch.

2. Students may not leave campus during lunch.

3. NO food or drinks may be taken from the cafeteria.

4. DO NOT leave trays on tables. Students MUST empty their trays into the trash and

clean up any mess they make.

5. Students who disregard these rules will be expected to help clean the cafeteria

and/or be banned from the cafeteria.

MONROE CITY SCHOOL BOARD’S

POLICIES ON ABSENCES

The Monroe City School System realizes that consistent, regular school attendance is mandatory to meet the educational needs of its students. The following policies have been adopted by the Monroe City School Board to reflect state law:

·  Schools shall administer attendance regulations in accordance with state and locally adopted policies.

·  Students shall be expected to be in attendance every activity day scheduled by the local governing authority.

·  According to state law, a high school student shall be in attendance a minimum of 82 days per semester.

·  Absences shall include temporarily-excused absences, permanently-excused absences, unexcused absences, and suspensions.

Temporarily-excused Absences

These absences are parent-verified, and they count toward the eight days allowed per semester. They include personal illness, serious illness in the family, death in the family (absence not to exceed one week), and recognized religious holidays of student’s own faith. The student shall be given the opportunity to make up work.

Permanently-excused Absences

These absences are excused under the following circumstances and do not count toward the eight days allowed per semester. Required documentation (physician statements, legal excuses, and verification statements of death in family) that must be presented to the Attendance Office within two (2) days after the student returns to school includes evidence of:

·  physical, or emotional illness, verified by physician

·  hospital stay, verified by physician

·  recuperation from accident, verified by a physician

·  contagious disease within a family, verified by a physician

·  death in family, documented

·  recognized religious holidays of the student’s faith.

Unexcused Absences

Absences which are unverified by the parent or those determined by the principal or his designee to be unexcused may result in disciplinary action.

Extenuating Circumstances

Absences that are verified by a physician and approved by the Supervisor of Child Welfare and Attendance include

·  extended physical or emotional illness

·  extended hospital stay

·  extended recuperation from accident.

Check-Outs

At the high school level, attendance is kept by class period and not by the day; therefore, checking out during the day may result in excessive absences for those classes missed.

Keep checkouts to a minimum.

Students may leave the campus only in the custody of their parents or only after the office has obtained permission from their parents.

·  Failure to observe the check-out policy will result in consequences that may include suspension.

·  If a student is ill, we are reluctant to let the student leave the campus unless he/she is accompanied by a parent or a responsible person who has been designated by the parent. The student will not be allowed to leave school unless he/she is signed out by a parent or designee.

·  Students checking out of Neville and returning the same day must report immediately to the Attendance Office to check in. (If returning from an appointment, bring official verification.)

·  Notes from parents are not accepted unless signed by an administrator.

Check-Ins

All students are determined to be “in school” while in transit to or from school or while participating in school activities. Upon arrival at school, you are required to stay on campus until you have completed your scheduled classes.

·  All students reporting to school late must report immediately to the Attendance Office for a tardy or admit slip.

·  Failure to properly check in will result in consequences that may include suspension.

·  Students will be allowed to sign into school late (before 8:30 am) if a parent calls the Attendance Office before the student arrives at school. After 8:30 am, a parent must accompany the student or the student must bring a statement from a doctor showing that he/she has completed an appointment.

Cutting Classes

Each student has an assigned location for each period of the school day. Students who are elsewhere, for any reason, will be considered to be cutting class. Should an emergency or illness occur, the student should report immediately to an administrator. Students who stay in the restrooms during class time without permission from an administrator are considered to be cutting class.

Admits to Class

Students who have missed part of a class must have an admit from an administrator or the Attendance Office before returning to class.

Make-Up Work

·  Students will be permitted to make up all work missed including tests and graded material if an absence is excused.

·  It is the student’s responsibility, upon his/her return to school, to ask the teacher if any test or graded material needs to be made up. The teacher will establish the time and place of make-up.

·  Students who are in school when a test assignment or activity is announced or who miss a regularly scheduled test, assignment or activity will be expected to take the test or complete the assignment or activity immediately upon their return to class.

·  Teachers may extend make-up time upon mutual agreement with the student. Students who fail to complete assignments, activities, or tests by the designated time will not receive credit for the incomplete assignments.

·  Although make up work is encouraged and accepted, credit will not be granted for work missed due to unexcused absences or suspensions.

Attendance and Activities

In order to participate in activities, a student must be in school on the day of the activity. Activities are functions of specific groups or classes which are approved by the principal. Classes missed during a school-approved activity are not considered absences. Students are responsible for making up missed work in a timely manner.

PK-12 Dress Code

The School Board will not allow any student to wear clothing that distracts from or disrupts the school's learning environment. The student's cleanliness and grooming will also be considered. The principal will have the final say in what is or is not proper dress. The students as well as the parents are expected to use good judgment regarding dress and appearance.

Shorts, skirts, and split-skirts shall be allowed so long as they measure no shorter than three (3) inches above the knee when the student is standing.

Capri pants are acceptable as long as they are not clinging to the body.

Biking shorts, boxer shorts worn as outer wear, sweat suits, warm-ups, jogging suits, pants with unrepaired holes, skin-tight pants and pants worn below the waist shall not be allowed.

Leggings worn under dresses, skirts, or shorts shall be allowed.

All pants with belt loops must be worn with a belt or other acceptable accessory for holding up pants (such as suspenders).

Baggy or drooping pants that fall off the hips are not allowed.
