Purpose / People credited with this unit standard are able to: develop systems for the routine cleaning, maintenance, and repair of public swimming pool plant and equipment; develop safe practices for the operation of public swimming pool plant and equipment; organise cleaning and maintenance supplies and services for public swimming pool plant and equipment; and develop and implement procedures for the repair and replacement of the plant and equipment of a public swimming pool.

Explanatory notes

1A public swimming pool includes the pool or pools, their fixtures and surrounds, shower and changing areas, fun equipment, play areas, and attached facilities where they exist.

2Swimming pool plant and equipment includes but is not limited to – vacuuming equipment; filtration, circulation, disinfection, and dosing systems; associated equipment.

3Underpinning skills and knowledge useful for this unit standard could be evidenced by the holding of Unit 5687, Develop and implement plans for maintaining a safe aquatic facility; and Unit 7019, Plan and establish procedures to manage the plant of a recreation facility.

4Competence in this unit standard includes compliance with the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 (HSE Act), as it applies to the elimination of significant hazards, isolation of significant hazards when elimination is not possible, and minimisation of significant hazards when elimination and isolation are not possible.

5Competence in this unit standard includes compliance with the New Zealand Standards relating to public swimming pool operation:

NZS 5826:2000, Pool water quality

NZS 4441:2008, Swimming pool design Standard, available from

Public swimming pool is as defined in NZS 5826.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Develop systems for the routine cleaning, maintenance, and repair of public swimming pool plant and equipment.

Evidence requirements

1.1Systems developed for cleaning meet facility standards.

Rangesystems – timing, sequencing, staffing, security arrangements;

standards – safety, frequency, visible cleanliness, odour, impact on patron use.

1.2Systems developed for the maintenance and repair of plant and equipment meet facility standards and HSE Act requirements and are in accordance with manufacturers’ instructions.

Rangesystems – preventative inspection, maintenance schedules, signage, movement of equipment, record of work completed.

1.3Monitoring of usage and condition meets identified facility planning needs.

Rangeneeds – additional equipment, replacement, redundancy of plant and equipment.

Outcome 2

Develop safe practices for the operation of public swimming pool plant and equipment.

Evidence requirements

2.1Procedures and techniques developed for operating plant and equipment meet HSE Act requirements and are in accordance with manufacturers’ instructions and the safety needs of the staff involved.

2.2Staff training programmes are developed for implementing facility policy on operating procedures, safety procedures, and maintenance programmes.

Rangestaff training programmes may include – on-job training, refresher courses, specialist training with outside agencies, pre-season training.

Outcome 3

Organise cleaning and maintenance supplies for public swimming pool plant and equipment.

Evidence requirements

3.1Record keeping procedures supply stock and equipment information to facility standards.

Rangepurchasing, consumption, use, stock turnover, expiry dates.

3.2Security procedures maintain the safety of facility staff and patrons.

Rangeprocedures may include – unauthorised access, record of keyholders, pin number holders, safe codes.

3.3Purchasing procedures balance availability and economy of supply with facility standards for service.

Outcome 4

Develop and implement procedures for the repair and replacement of the plant and equipment of a public swimming pool.

Evidence requirements

4.1Inspection procedures of plant and equipment developed assesses needs.

Rangeneeds – repair, replacement, selection, purchase.

4.2Preparation of budget for plant and equipment meets facility standards for financial analysis and planning.

4.3Measures developed for the use and condition of plant and equipment establish criteria and priorities for action.

Rangecriteria – frequency of breakdown, maintenance costs, types of breakdowns, wear and tear on plant and equipment.

4.4Selection and purchasing criteria and procedures developed meet facility standards and objectives.

Rangecriteria – economy and/or value for money, within budget, back up including parts and servicing.
