Title / Dry textile materials in a rotating drum dryer

Purpose / This unit standard is for people working in the dyeing and finishing industry.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate knowledge of rotating drum drying; prepare and operate a rotating drum drying machine; and carry out batch end procedures.

Explanatory notes

1 Performance of the elements must comply with the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992.

2 Definitions

Workplace procedures refer to the verbal or documented procedures for performing activities including health and safety, operational, environmental and quality management requirements. They refer to manuals, manufacturer's specification, codes of practice, or policy statements.

Product specifications refer to the document which accompanies each manufacturing order. This specifies all of the parameters for production of the yarn batch. This may include the fibre specification, the shade, dye bath parameters, machinery to be used and finishing procedures.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Demonstrate knowledge of rotating drum drying.

Evidence requirements

1.1 Rotating drum drying is described in terms of the process steps.

Range load preparation, drying cycle, unloading.

1.2 Rotating drum drying machine is described in terms of its function and operation.

Range drying machine, drum, door mechanism, air circulation system, machine controls, safety interlocks.

Outcome 2

Prepare and operate a rotating drum drying machine.

Evidence requirements

2.1 Substrate is identified according to product specifications.

2.2 Machine is emptied and cleaned to prevent contamination from the previous batch.

2.3 Dryer is prepared and operated in accordance with workplace procedures.

2.4 Machine loading and preparation are according to workplace procedures.

Range quantity according to product specifications, substrate free of door.

2.5 Machine is monitored during operation.

Range drum balance maintained, substrate moisture content.

Outcome 3

Carry out batch end procedures.

Evidence requirements

3.1 Machine and work area are cleaned to prevent contamination.

Range drum, air filters, surrounding work area.

3.2 Any machine faults are reported according to workplace procedures.

Range faults may include but are not limited to – steam leaks, seals, lubrication.
