Title / Evacuate patients using a toboggan on a snowsport area

Purpose / People credited with this unit standard are able to: transport an empty toboggan to dispatch site; secure toboggan at site and load patient; and control a loaded toboggan on any terrain at a snowsport area.
This unit standard may be of interest to people working towards their patrolling qualifications.

Prerequisites / Unit 4580, Demonstrate skiing or snowboarding skills for patrol, or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills.
Unit 14470, Provide enhanced basic life support; Unit 14471, Provide extended first aid; Unit 14473, Move a patient in preparation for transportation; or aCertificate in Emergency Management (or equivalent).

Guidance Information

1Assessment against this unit standard may require the use of simulated activities for training and/or assessment of patient care and handling.

2All activities must comply with the policies, procedures, and requirements of the enterprises involved and any relevant environmental, legislative and/or regulatory requirements which include but are not limited to the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 (HSE), Injury Prevention, Rehabilitation, and Compensation Act 2001, and their subsequent amendments and associated regulations.

Outcomes and performance criteria

Outcome 1

Transport an empty toboggan to dispatch site.

Performance criteria

1.1Toboggan and associated equipment are checked for working condition, and any necessary maintenance completed prior to being returned to its location.

Rangemay include but is not limited to – chains, toboggan pack contents, state of handles, tail rope, straps, locking horns, rig pins.

1.2Toboggan is uploaded in a safe manner.

Rangemay include but is not limited to – chair/surface lift, snowmobile, snowgroomer.

1.3Toboggan is transported to designated site in a safe manner with minimum delay.

Rangeaccident site location, route selection, traffic flow.

Outcome 2

Secure toboggan at site and load patient.

Performance criteria

2.1Patient, site, and toboggan are secured against further accident and/or injury.

Rangeprotection of patient, protection of other slope users, protection of self.

2.2Patient is lifted and positioned in the toboggan taking into account patient injuries and comfort.

Outcome 3

Control a loaded toboggan on any terrain at a snowsport area.

Rangefront position, tail position.

Performance criteria

3.1A route and method of control is selected to maximise patient comfort and to maintain toboggan stability.

Rangemay include but is not limited to – traffic, surface and terrain conditions, tail rope, lowering.

3.2Skiing or boarding techniques and turns are selected for the terrain and snow conditions.

Rangeskiing techniques may include – traverse, sideslip, wedge turns, braking, parallel turns, short-radius, medium-radius, long-radius;

boarding techniques may include – traverse, sideslip, heel toe side, braking, short-radius, medium-radius, long-radius.

3.3The speed of the toboggan is controlled and brought to a stop, in any snow conditions.

Rangemay include but is not limited to – tail rope, chains, locking of handles, lowering devices.

3.4The toboggan is positioned correctly in relation to the slope and snow conditions and for patient injuries and control of the toboggan.

3.5Information is communicated to the front and/or tail person in order to facilitate the evacuation of the patient.

Rangeroute selection, skiing or boarding techniques, toboggan position, braking requirements, assessment of patient.

3.6The toboggan is controlled on difficult and/or steep snow slopes to ensure patient safety, using tail roping techniques.

Rangetail roping techniques may include but are not limited to – body belay, seated belay.
