Love & Logic Tip ~ PARENTS CAN REDUCE STRESS THIS HOLIDAY SEASON BY GIVINGTHE GIFT OF TIME

  • For many American families, this holiday season will be much different than others in recent memory.
  • The current economic slowdown likely will affect many people, from the lack of a holiday bonus orovertime pay to the loss of a job. But tight times don’t mean your holidays have to be ruined.
  • Less spending money can encourage families to escape the materialistic view of the holidays andconnectwith

what kids really want from their parents: Time. This is one of a child’s most basic human

needs.

Our studies and experience at the Love and Logic Institute reveal that kids have a strong subconscious

drive to focus on possessions when they do not get their share of time and fun with parents. They try to

“fill up” on stuff when they feel empty.

By applying some simple techniques, parents can help their kids fill up on relationships instead of

possessions. Their view can change from “What can I get?” to “What can I give?” Here’s how:

  • Step One: Don’t hide a tight family budget from the kids.
  • Step Two: Talk with your children about the precious gift of time.
  • Step Three: Set limits on the amount of money you can spend for gifts.
  • Step Four: Help your kids make their own gift certificates and wrapping paper.

Jim Fay is president and cofounder of the Love and Logic Institute in Golden, Colo., and coauthor of

the best-selling book, Parenting with Love and Logic. For more information about Love and Logicparenting and teaching techniques, call 1-800-LUV-LOGIC or visit.

From the desk of Mrs. Moore and Mrs. Barker:

Finding quality time to spend together with your children can be a challenge. Everyone is so busy, but here are some suggestions on how to build this time into your schedule:

  • 1)turn off the television/electronics,
  • 2) volunteer at the Gospel Mission or Humane Shelter,
  • 3) exercise at home, take a walk or go to the park together as a family,
  • 4) plan to have one meal a day/week together as a family,
  • 5) plan family time and put it on the calendar for each

week/month.

It is not the quantity of time, but the quality of time you spend with your children giving them you undivided attention. To help your child(ren) reach their full potential in school and in life plan and schedule some meaningful family time this month and every month.

Please make sure your child comes to school with the appropriate clothing to stay warm and protected from the elements. Students need to come to school with long sleeves, pants or leggings, socks, boots, hat, mittens, and a coat during colder winter weather. Since Spalding Park is an Environmental Science Specialty School we take as many opportunities as possible to spend time outside, as long as it is safe, even if it is snowing or raining. Please make sure to write your child’s name on their coat and other outdoor clothing, this will make it easier to find if it lands in the lost and found box. If your child is missing a clothing item, check out our lost and found boxes in the custodians work area on the main floor behind the kitchen. Any items not picked up will be donated to Goodwill at the end of this school year.
