Title / Carry out aeronautical NDT inspections using radiographic gamma ray methods

Purpose / People credited with this unit standard are able to carry out aeronautical NDT (non destructive testing) inspections using radiographic gamma ray methods by preparingparts for radiography, producing a radiograph, and completing post-inspection tasks.

Entry information
Critical health and safety prerequisites / Candidates must pass the following vision examination:
Near vision acuity
Natural or corrected near-distance acuity in at least one eye to show that the applicant is able to:
–read a minimum of Jaeger Number 2 or equivalent type and size letter at a distance of not less than 30.5 cm (12 inches) on a standard Jaeger test chart; or
–perceive an Ortho-Rater minimum of 8 (or similar test pattern).

Explanatory notes

All tasks are to be carried out in accordance with enterprise procedures, the enterprise being the organisation carrying out the work. Enterprise procedures referred to in this unit standard are the applicable procedures found in the following:enterprise exposition;manufacturer publications;Government and local body legislation;airworthiness authority requirements.

Outcome 1

Prepare aeronauticalparts for NDT inspections using radiographic gamma ray methods.

Evidence requirements

1.1Task is determined by reviewing maintenance documentation and enterprise procedures.

1.2Work area is prepared, and resources obtained and checked for serviceability or status in accordance with enterprise procedures.

Rangepublications, materials, tools, equipment, safety equipment, environmental conditions established, area secured.

1.3Identification of part is matched with documentation by comparing serial and/or part numbers.

1.4Part is prepared for radiography in accordance with enterprise procedures.

Rangeclean surface finish.

1.5Gamma ray equipment is set up and calibrated in accordance with enterprise procedures.

Rangeorientation, distance, film placement, film identification marking.

Outcome 2

Produce aradiograph.

Evidence requirements

2.1Film is exposed in accordance with enterprise procedures.

Rangecontrol density, sensitivity.

2.2Film is processed in accordance with enterprise procedures.

Rangemanual, automatic.

2.3Radiograph is inspected in accordance with enterprise procedures.

Rangeinspection equipment, standards, specifications, precision measuring equipment, relevant and non-relevant indications.

Outcome 3

Complete post-inspection tasks.

Evidence requirements

3.1Inspected part is prepared for storage or transit in accordance with enterprise procedures.

Rangepost-test clean, inhibit, blank, pack.

3.2Resources are checked for serviceability and returned to service or storage in accordance with enterprise procedures.

Rangetools, equipment, safety equipment, publications.

3.3Leftover materials are disposed of in accordance with enterprise procedures.

Rangemay include but is not limited to – serviceable, unserviceable, waste, hazardous.

3.4Documentation is completed in accordance with enterprise procedures.

Rangemay include but is not limited to – labels, work cards, log books.

3.5Work environment is left in a state thatenables the next task to begin in accordance with enterprise procedures.
