Updates from Panel Leadership

  • Leadership meets approximately one week before full panel meetings in order to establish panel meeting agendas – feel free to write to them to submit agenda items for consideration
  • Dr. Adams-Gaston (Dr. J) will come to one of our November meetings – working on scheduling now
  • Curriculum integration workgroup in the process of forming – Gina Hnytka to co-chair with a yet to be identified faculty member – to start their work in October

Workgroup Updates:

  • Definitions and Criteria
  • Looked at CAFOs (defined by the EPA as having more than 10,000 animal units within one location) last meeting – conclusion: for a protein source to be considered sustainable, at a minimum, environmental and animal welfare standards must be met in order to be counted towards the 40% sustainable criteria
  • Exclusions group has previously settled on: 1) known violations of regulatory standards including workers, animals and the environment – possibly develop a procedure where we could suspend without eliminating; 2) any business that would not allow students, faculty or staff of Ohio State to tour
  • Will not have an exclusion for GM food, but like all other food being examined, GM food must qualify under at least one environmental certification and under one other certification in another column in the sustainability matrix
  • Sourcing, Data Metrics, and Transparency
  • Lilian Brislen from UK briefed group at last meeting on how they categorize food and present data
  • Group has started to organize data based on identifying some of the larger reporting categories used by US Foods

-In the coming weeks to iron out final categories for reporting

-Looked at paper on ultra-processed foods and are able to match the categories in the paper with thegroup’s reporting

  • Oct 15 deadline for reporting on fresh lettuce and tomato purchasing
  • Governance
  • No report, the group will meet tomorrow
  • Communications
  • Workgroup met last Friday; discussed posting July 2017 report on website and submitting a blurb to onCampus Today to communicate the report findings; request from leadership team that when posting the report online, include a disclaimer noting that the report is a historical document and progress is underway
  • In touch with University Marketing regarding rolling out a new website – hopefully more info to come on this front in the coming months as University Marketing prioritizes work
  • Decision made at the meeting: communications content to be reviewed by the Panel’s leadership team before being made public
