3rd Grade Lesson Plan

Games:

  1. Building a snowman –Divide the children into 6 groups. Give each group one roll of toilet paper, construction paperin various colors, 3 pair of scissors and masking tape. One member of the group will become the snowman and the others will build the snowman by wrapping the toilet paper around them. They will then cut out buttons, hats, bows, noses etc. out of construction paper and attach with masking tape to decorate the snowmen. The key is to get creative! Have the teacher take a picture of each group with their completed snowman!

Supplies (per class of 25): 6 toilet paper rolls, 25-30 sheets of construction paper, 18 pair of scissors, 6 rolls of masking tape, a parent or teacher with a camera.

  1. Pass the Candy Cane relay –The object is for the players to pass 4 candy canes held between the fingers of one hand from one player to the next without dropping or breaking them. First have the children play with the entire class standing in a circle to practice.Once everyone grasps the idea, divide up into two teams and have them race sending the candy canes down the row and back.

Supplies (per class of 25): 12 Traditional sized candy canes

Craft: Beaded Snowflake Decoration

Difficulty: Very Easy

Parental supervision is recommended

Make a sparkly beaded snowflake decoration as a winter or Christmas craft. Kids will have fun both stringing the beads and admiring their handiwork afterwards.

What you'll need:

  • Three chenille stems (six inchesin length)
  • Eight crystal paddlewheel or sunburst beads (18 millimeters)
  • 20 crystal faceted beads (eight millimeters)
  • 18 crystal tri-beads (11 millimeters)
  • Hot glue gun or craft glue
  • Wire cutters (to cut chenille stems)

How to make it:

  1. Cut chenille stems to equalsix inchesin length.
  2. Twist them in the center once or put a spot of hot glue to hold them together, then spread out the arms gently, keeping it flat.
  3. String the beads on each arm in the following pattern:

  5. Onetri-bead
  6. Onefaceted bead
  7. Onetri-bead
  8. Onepaddle wheel
  9. Onetri-bead
  10. Onefaceted
  11. Put a spot of glue under each last faceted bead. When dry clip off ends of chenille stem.
  12. Glue (hot glue is best) one paddle wheel in center of each side then one faceted in center of each paddle wheel that is in the middle.
  13. Make a hanger of fishing line or invisible thread.

Snack: Build a Snowman

Give each student a plate with a spoon of vanilla frosting, a popsicle stick for spreading, 2-3 large marshmallows, 2 carrots, a small bunch of pretzel sticks and a small bunch of m&ms. Using the frosting as glue they will attempt to construct a snowman that they can then eat!

1 bag large marshmallows

1 bag mini carrots

1 bag plain m&ms

1 can vanilla frosting

25 popsicle sticks

25 plates & napkins

25 small water bottles
