1. Overall Description:

3GPP SA2 thanks IEEE 802.11 for their liaison regarding future interworking co-operation, dated 2007-09-18.

SA2 acknowledges the valuable work which has been done in IEEE 802.11u and appreciates the offer to enter into a closer co-operation, including a face-2-face meeting. We regret that in our Helsinki meeting, the I-WLAN related agenda slot (on 28th August 2007) was fully occupied and no discussion opportunity was possible with IEEE 802.11u.

Given the overlapping meeting calendars of both groups until January 2008, a first possible date for a face-2-face meeting between SA2 and IEEE 802.11u is within SA2#63 meeting (February 18th – 22nd, 2008) in Athens. We hope that IEEE 802.11u is able to plan and co-locate one of their meetings to enable common sessions. This is the preferred date from SA2 perspective, looking at work planning of both groups. However, the three subsequent SA2 meetings may be used as – although less preferred - alternatives (see list below). SA2 thinks that an agenda time slot of maximum 3 hours can be made available.

After IEEE 802.11 has confirmed the principal agreement for a face-2-face meeting with a date, further arrangements can be done between the chairmen of both groups.

For the benefits of SA2 delegates in terms of preparation, and for detailing the agenda of the face-2-face meeting properly, so as to enable an efficient and productive discussion, SA2 kindly requests a draft specification of IEEE 802.11u with enough time for review before the joint meeting. Please note that above planning cannot be seen definitive before such a review, as SA2 has to cross-check the topics and relevance with their ongoing work.

Regarding NW Discovery and Selection, SA2 likes to inform IEEE 802.11 that within 3GPP the working group CT1 is responsible for doing the stage 2 and stage 3 work. However, SA2 documents architectural impacts stemming from NW Discovery and Selection in their specifications.

2. Actions:

ACTION 1: SA2 kindly asks IEEE 802.11 to confirm the proposed date for the face-2-face joint meeting (SA2#63 meeting during the week of 18th – 22ndFebruary 2008), or one of the available alternatives.

ACTION 2: IEEE 802.11u is kindly asked to provide their draft specification to SA2 with enough time for review before the joint meeting, if possible.
