3C: RELEVANT DETAILS FROM THE SITES & MONUMENTS RECORD
SMR No / Location / Description
602 / TL 0930 0650 / Late Bronze Age hoard including looped socketed axe. Discovered by Sir John Evans late 19th century. Precise location of finds uncertain.
1818 / TL 109 067 / Shrunken Medieval Village. It should be noted that the SMR record for this supposed shrunken medieval village places its location 2.25Km from the site of the school dig in the area of Hill End Farm, principally as the result of work undertaken by the MVRG in 1974. It is however my firm belief that the principle area of settlement in Medieval times was to be found along Westwick Row, but that it spread out considerably to include the area around Hill End and Gorhambury – Westwick being not a nucleated settlement but an “Interrupted Row”, a settlement term devised by Christopher Dryer (Everyday Life in Medieval England, 1994,) and referred to with reference to Westwick by Christopher Currie.
