Position Summary:

The Care Clinic Dental Hygienist is responsible for the delivery of professional dental hygiene services to the patients of the Clinic Dental Program, working under the administrative supervision of the Dental Coordinator and the clinical supervision of the Dental Director. The hygienist assumes responsibility for the goals of the hygiene program; monitoring progress and implementing changes that will help meet goals. Provides quality dental hygiene care to the patient population and makes appropriate referrals as needed. The Dental Hygienist performs related duties as assigned by the Dental Clinic Manager and the Chief Dental Officer.

Performs dental measures designed to preserve teeth and prevent the spread of oral disease.

The Dental Hygienist must demonstrate regard for the rights of all patients and provides respectful and considerate care focused on the patient's individual needs. The Dental Hygienist will provide a safe and confidential environment for patients, families and personnel.

Essential Functions:

1.  Promotes the philosophy and mission of the Summit Community Care Clinic

2.  Provides dental hygiene services, under the supervision of the Dental Director, following the established protocols, including but not limited to: conducting daily dental hygiene clinic; establishing patient history through interview, and oral hygiene education.

3.  Assists Walk- In Clinics by performing triage, screening dental radiographs and preparing the patient for the dentist.

4.  Ensures appropriate documentation and maintenance of dental records.

5.  Performs Case Management

o  Thorough and effective explanation of treatment plans including scheduling

o  Referral to Alliance Dental Practices

o  Follow up on treatment plans

6.  Maintains compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations and provides assistance in accordance with those guidelines. Responsible for maintaining knowledge of such regulations and for the application of such guidelines in the workplace.

7.  Acts as a representative of Summit Community Care Clinic with local dentists and their staffs, dental schools, dental laboratories, service clubs and organizations, patients, and the general public, acting in a professional and responsible manner.

8.  Understand and performs Case Management to ensure completed treatment planning.

9.  Performs other related job duties as determined by the Dental Coordinator and Dental Director.

Education/Experience:

At least one (1) year experience as a Dental Hygienist in a dental office setting preferred.

Previous experience in a dental clinic required.

Previous non-profit, indigent, and/or volunteer experience desirable.

·  Knowledge of Federal, State, and institutional regulations and guidelines for the provision of dental outpatient services.

·  Ability to independently assess the nature and extent of dental, periodontic, and associated conditions and pathology in dental outpatients.

·  Knowledge of patient screening, charting, and medical history procedures and documentation.

·  Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical personnel.

·  Ability to perform a full range of established dental hygienist protocol and procedures

·  Ability to analyze medical records and prescribed protocol to formulate effective therapeutic treatment plans.

·  Knowledge and understanding of dental surgery and associated procedures, terminology, and techniques.

·  Ability to set up and prepare dental equipment and instrumentation in accordance with established regulations and guidelines.

·  Ability to independently perform emergency dental procedures.

Language Ability: Ability to read, write and clearly speak the English language. Ability to read, write and clearly speak the Spanish language preferred. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions and deal with multiple linguistic cultural variables.

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

The Dental Hygienist performs a variety of duties involving broad ranges of activity, including assessment, planning, evaluating, and modifying the treatment of patients. The work involves counseling, teaching, coordinating of services, and participating with other disciplines within the community. The work involves determining the dental care needed in a general population, and assisting in planning, developing and evaluating the health delivery system. The position requires the ability to interact with the low-income public, with community representatives, office staff and supervisors. The ability to make appropriate decisions based on fact and knowledge is required.

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Interpersonal Skills: Ability to relate cooperatively and constructively with patients, co-workers, administration, physicians and providers, community agencies, referral sources, regulators and other health team members. Ability to enlist the cooperation of others. High tolerance for stress.

Interpersonal skills and sound judgment necessary to communicate with a wide variety of persons, including the indigent, and to work with the Clinic staff in coordinating the dental services of the Clinic.

Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have a solid knowledge of word processing software, spreadsheet software and database software.

Knowledge of dental computer software programs for treatment, planning and scheduling.

Hands on experience with dental computer software.

Certificates and Licenses:

OSHA required courses for positions, CPR.

Certification by the State of Colorado as a Registered Dental Hygienist required.

Current Anesthesia certification by the State of Colorado or within one year of employment.

Work Environment:

The work environment is in a healthcare setting and can be fast paced and involve working directly with patients and healthcare professionals. Many of our patients with chronic disease have a minimal level of health literacy and a significant number of barriers to accessing health care. The individual may also work in a clerical setting. The work is performed in a clinic, well lighted, heated and ventilated, where exposure to infections and contagious diseases may occur.

Physical Requirements:

Visual, Audio-Visual and Dexterity:

Requires concentrated visual attention that must be maintained for sustained periods. Requires excellent near vision and depth perception. Good far vision and peripheral vision required. Good color discrimination required.

Excellent eye and hand coordination, and excellent manual dexterity required.

Summit Community Care Clinic staff, patients, local dentists and their staffs, community representatives and the general public. The position requires frequent, direct contact with emotionally distraught patients.
