Title / Follow treatment procedures to control insects and spiders in the urban pest management industry

Purpose / This unit standard is for people training for the urban pest management industry.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: complete preparations prior to treatment for the control of insects and spiders; comply with treatment procedures to control insects and spiders; and complete job-related tasks following the treatment for the control of insects and spiders.

Critical health and safety prerequisites / Prerequisites: Unit 3254, Follow safe practices in the urban pest management industry; Unit 3255, Demonstrate knowledge required by a trainee in the urban pest management industry; and Unit 3256, Locate information and complete documentation and records for urban pest management operations; or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills.
Explanatory notes
1Competence demonstrated during assessment against this unit standard must comply with the requirements of:
Consumer Guarantees Act 1993;
Food Act 1981;
Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996;
Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992;
Resource Management Act 1991;
AS/NZS 1715:2009 – Selection, use and maintenance of respiratory protective equipment.
2Industry best practice refers to enterprise and/or establishment requirements and practices which are in accordance with applicable legislation, regulations and safety data sheets.
Organisational requirements refers to instructions to staff on policy procedures and methods relating to urban pest management (including health and safety) and the application of any written procedures which are documented in memo or manual format and are available in the workplace.
3Assessment against this unit standard must be completed under supervision.
‘Under supervision’ means that the candidate being assessed against this standard must be supervised by a person with competency in urban pest management to at least the level of Unit 3258, Apply treatments to control insects and spiders in the urban pest management, and who has authority to direct the activity onsite to be undertaken by the learner in relation to:
iprior selection of the site to be treated;
iiprovision of a range of possible treatment procedures and materials for the candidate to select from.
Such supervision will enable repetition of tasks by the learner in a sequential order and on a regular basis, to promote the safe and effective demonstration of competency.
A supervisor can be either an owner/operator or a delegated employee of an urban pest management business.
4The site report, service agreement and initial contact inquiry will be completed and held by the supervisor. The trainee will have access to these documents for this unit standard.
Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Complete preparations prior to treatment for the control of insects and spiders.
Evidence requirements
1.1Vehicle is prepared in readiness for job in accordance with industry best practice and organisational requirements.
Rangevehicle readiness includes – clean and tidy, current warrant of fitness, current registration, vehicle record book up-to-date.
1.2Requirements for task are verified from site report.
1.3Equipment, Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and materials required for the operation are checked to ensure they are in good condition and operational in accordance with industry best practice and organisational requirements.
1.4Insecticide is prepared in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations.
Outcome 2
Comply with treatment procedures to control insects and spiders.
Rangeinsects – cockroaches, fleas, flies, ants, silverfish, bees, wasps, carpet beetles, booklice, mites.
Evidence of any six required, must include at least one insect and one spider.
Evidence requirements
2.1Procedures for client liaison are followed during the treatment in accordance with organisational requirements.
2.2Areas of infestation are verified from site report.
2.3Potential damage to surrounding area is avoided by minimising overspray.
2.4Treatment procedures are followed in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations.
2.5All work practices comply with manufacturer’s recommendations, industry best practice and organisational requirements.
Outcome 3
Complete job-related tasks following treatment for the control of insects and spiders.

Evidence requirements
3.1Client is provided with written advice relating to post-treatment requirements as specified for treatment method, chemicals used and preventative measures.
Rangere-entry time, proofing, warning signs.
3.2Overspray is removed in accordance with industry best practice.
3.3Chemicals are secured in accordance with the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996.
3.4All items of personal equipment and machinery are cleaned and maintained in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations.
3.5Documentation relating to job is processed in accordance with organisational requirements.
Rangeany required job or site reporting.
3.6Post-treatment personal hygiene and safety procedures are followed in accordance with industry best practice and organisational requirements.
