Greetings! We trust that you are having a productive and restful summer, and we are looking forward to your return in August. In addition to sending greetings and welcoming you back, this memorandum is intended to inform you of advising, registration and class schedules for the fall.

Fall 2011 Class Registration – Beth Sauer, Registrar for the School of Social Work (919-962-6443, ) will register you for your two required courses and field practicum. In July you should receive an email directing you online to see your tuition and fees invoice. Tuition and fees must be paid or deferred by August 9, 2011, or your course schedule will be canceled.

Financial Aid / Jobs – If you have questions regarding your federal aid, please contact the UNC Office of Scholarships & Student Aid: (919) 962-8396 or . You may also visit their website for helpful hints at http://studentaid.unc.edu/studentaid/status/ssa_helpful_hints.html. You may want to remind them that you are paying an additional $300 per semester for the field fee.

Advising – Dayna Guido will be the Director of the Mountain Area Distance Education Program and your Faculty Advisor this year. Ms Guido may be reached at . She will meet with each of you in the fall semester after your Concentration Orientation (date TBA) to review your academic progress and ensure your plans for your third year. You will also have a plan of study advisor, either Beth Sauer (for last names that begin with A-L) or Sarah Naylor (for last names that begin with M-Z). Your plan of study advisor will help you submit your plan of study in the spring and is available for consultation regarding MSW curriculum policies and procedures.

Foundation Field Placement Arrangements – The Field Education Office is processing the forms necessary to finalize your field placement match for the 2011-2012 academic year. Please be sure to go online and confirm your acceptance of the placement if you have not already done so. Please contact Dayna Guido with questions or concerns regarding your foundation field placement.

Foundation Field Placement Orientation – Your foundation field placement orientation is scheduled for Wednesday, August 31, 2011, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm in the Technology Education and Development Center Conference Hall, BRCC. Your attendance at this orientation is REQUIRED; the session will count toward your foundation field practicum hours. Lunch will be provided.

2011-2012 Foundation Field Practicum Seminar – As part of your foundation field practicum you will attend a foundation field seminar series during lunch on alternate Fridays throughout the academic year. A schedule and syllabus for this seminar series will be provided during the field orientation August 31. The seminar component is designed to assist students in integrating classroom learning with the direct experience of practicum and serves as a professional support group for discussing field issues. Students have the opportunity to review their basic understanding of group process as well as practice group leadership skills.

Change of Address – Please notify Student Services Assistant, Tiffany Carver, at 919-843-8452, or with any name, address, phone, and email changes you may have made over the summer. You should also make the changes at http://my.unc.edu/dt.

School of Social Work Potluck – We hope you will join us on Saturday, September 24, 2011, 3:00-6:00 pm, for the annual SSW Potluck at Wilson Park in Carrboro. This is a yearly tradition that brings together faculty, staff and students for a wonderful afternoon of fun activities and great food!

Another tradition is Harambee’, a multi-cultural celebration, which will be held in the Spring 2012 semester at the UNC School of Social Work in the 5th floor lounge.

Finally, I wanted to make everyone aware of my departure from the UNC School of Social Work. After serving as a faculty member for nearly 20 years at UNC, I am leaving July 1st to become the Dean of the University of South Carolina School of Social Work. I want to wish all of you the very best in your graduate studies at Carolina! The new Associate Dean of Academic Affairs will be Dr. Joelle Powers.
