Purpose / This unit standard is for people working in the signmaking industry.
People credited with this unit standard are able to;prepare and paint substrates for sign application; apply sign graphics;and complete the tasks related to preparation of substrates and application of sign graphics.

2Definitions

PPE – personal protective equipment. May include but is not limited to face mask, eye protection, skin protection.

Workplace procedures – procedures used by the organisation carrying out the work and applicable to the tasks being carried out. Examples are – standard operating procedures, site safety procedures, equipment operating procedures, codes of practice, quality management practices and standards, procedures to comply with legislative and local body requirements.

Outcomes and performance criteria

Outcome 1

Prepare and paint substrates for sign application.

Rangesubstrates – aluminium composite material (ACM), acrylic, foam PVC, timber, concrete, fibro-cement panels, interior wallboard, plywood;

a minimum of twodifferent substrates must be prepared.

Performance criteria

1.1Work area is prepared and made safe in accordance with workplace procedures.

1.2Height access equipment appropriate to the task is selected, set up, and used in accordance with workplace procedures.

Range may include but is not limited to – ladders, stands, trestles, elevated work platforms, scaffolding.

1.3Substrate is prepared for paintingin accordance with workplace procedures and paint manufacturer’s instructions.

Range preparation tasks may include but are not limited to – sanding, water blasting, scouring, cleaning, degreasing.

1.4Paint systems are selected in accordance with job specifications and paint manufacturer’sinstructions.

Rangepaint systems may include – primers, undercoats, topcoats.

1.5Paint systems are applied in accordance with job specifications and paint manufacturer’sinstructions.

Rangeapplication methods:two of – brush, roller, spray gun.

1.6Preparedsurface is checked for condition and suitability for application of sign graphics. Any nonconformities are corrected.

1.7PPE is used in accordance with workplace procedures.

Outcome 2

Apply sign graphics.

Rangeone of – self-adhesive film, painting by hand.

Performance criteria

2.1Sign area is marked out to position graphics in accordance with job specification and workplace procedures.

Rangemay include but is not limited to – measuring,scaling, projecting, alignment, chalk pouncing, hand mark out.

2.2Sign graphics are applied to substrate to meet job specifications in accordance with workplace procedures.

Rangemay include but is not limited to – paint and equipment preparation, hand painting, checking and alignment of film, application of film.

2.3Completedsignis checked for compliance with job specification.

Rangeposition, colour, size.

2.4If required, protective finish is applied in accordance with job specifications and workplace procedures.

Rangemay include but is not limited to – liquid, film.

Outcome 3

Complete the tasks related to preparation of substrates and application of sign graphics.

Performance criteria

3.1Equipment is cleaned up, and packed and/or stored in accordance with workplace procedures.

3.2Work area is returned to the required state.

3.3Rubbish and waste are disposed of in accordance with workplace procedures.

3.4Documentation relating to the job is completed in accordance with workplace procedures.

Rangemay include but is not limited to – work cards, job cards, time records, materials used records.
