  • Program

At Mill Park Playgroup we feel play is essential in children’s development, and believe children develop in their own time and at their own pace. It is for this reason a ‘play-based’ programhas been developed in which many activities such as sensory displays, art, craft, drawing, playdough, story reading, gardening, science, interactive songs & dance, plus much more, are on offer. Themed sessions will regularly be incorporated to introduce children to new concepts, enabling them to explore their interests and gain understandings of the world they live in. In addition, this program will support the children’s creativity, emerging literacy and numeracy skills, as well as assist the development of their fine motor skills, large muscle movements, and last but not least, their social skills and pro-social behaviour.

This structured program begins with an hour of ‘free play’ where children choose which activities, craftsand/or imaginary play settings they would like to explore. At around 11am, the children will sit at tables together to eat lunch and have a social chat. This is a great opportunity for children to develop their verbal skills as they chat to their friends and also practice asking adults to help open lunch containers /wrappers. Next, if the weather is favourable, children will have the opportunity to play outside on our outdoor play equipment and develop an appreciation of nature as we discuss the vegetation and, later in the year, plant our own veggie patch. During the last 30 minutes, one child will practice their public speaking by telling us something about a special item they have brought in from home. This also encourages children in the audience to ask questions. After this, Storytime usually follows, where a picture book or digital story is presented to the group. Singing, music and interactive movements finish the session. Children are then dismissed one by one (usually with a colourful stamp or little surprise) upon the ‘sighting’ of each associated parent.
