1. Objective
The objective of this set of guidelines is to ensure that waste is handled in such a way that it does not result in or represent a potential risk of pollution or environmental damage or injury to people or animals. The guidelines are prepared as a contribution to creating a common system for waste handling that is adequate and sound and that applies to the entire organisation of NTNU.
2. Scope
This set of guidelines applies to the handling of all waste, with the exception of waste covered by the definition “hazardous waste” – for which separate local directives have been prepared.
3. Responsibilities and authority
The Technical Division is responsible for NTNU’s waste handling systems. This responsibility includes the preparation of guidelines for the handling of waste; the placing and labelling of suitable waste containers; and the transportation and disposal of the waste. It is the HSE section’s responsibility to inform the units about the guidelines for waste handling at NTNU.
Employees and students are responsible for sorting and disposing of the waste in accordance with these guidelines.
4. Definitions and abbreviations
Waste: Ordinary waste or refuse is waste that is categorised and described in the table in point 5 of this set of guidelines.
Hazardous waste: Waste that may result in or represent a potential risk of pollution or environmental damage or injury to people or animals. Hazardous waste may be organic solvents; various types of chemicals; or risk waste such as blood, cells, viruses, bacteria, contaminated disposable equipment, and sharp or pointed objects. Radioactive waste/isotopes also belong to this category. Separate guidelines for hazardous waste have been prepared locally for the units that handle such waste.
