1.PURPOSE

General outline for the disassembly of the corrosion cell in order to gain optimal corrosion data.

2.SCOPE AND APPLICABILITY

This procedure provides the safe framework for disassembly of the corrosion cell after molten Pb operation. Any deviations that may affect lead exposure will be approved by I.H. Previous Pb levels measured by I.H. will be recorded in the experimental plan.

3.PREREQUISITES

3.1The corrosion cell is cool to the touch.

3.2The following PPE is on hand:

-respirators

-latex gloves

-disposal clothing

-safety glasses

-safety shoes

3.3The ventilation system is operational.

3.4The following cleaning supplies are available:

-wet wipes

-paper towels

-glass cleaner

-trash can marked for Pb-containing trash with a lid.

3.5Operators are current in lead training and respirator training (the ones in direct contact).

3.6Gas injection system is secured per procedure 100-1.

4.INSTRUCTIONS

4.1Remove the following connections from the top plate:

4.1.1Injection lance.

4.1.2Oxidation/reduction lines.

4.1.3Relief valve and associated tubing.

4.1.4O2 probe.

4.1.5Internal thermocouple.

4.1.6GHT exhaust line.

NOTE:The next step requires I.H. approved PPE. At a minimum, researchers will don the following:

-latex gloves

-lab coat

-safety glasses

4.2Remove the top plate. Note the appearance of the internal corrosion cell in laboratory notebook.

4.3Place the top plate in a metal tray to prevent the spread of Pb-dust.

4.4Remove corrosion cell from stand.

4.5Change gloves.

4.6The system is ready for sampling IAW 200-4

5.RECORDS

5.1Log disassembly and any abnormalities in the Pb-alloy Corrosion Laboratory Notebook.

6.DEFINITIONS

6.1Corrosion Cell: A piped section which contains the molten Pb-alloy. The cell is gas tight.

6.2GHT: Gas Handling Train. This system removes Pb particulate from the gas stream.

6.3Top Plate: The top of the corrosion cell which is actively cooled and allows a feed-through of injection ports.
