2nd Quarter Expectation Letter

Dear Parents:

I would like to take a few minutes to discuss the things that will take place this quarter. First, I would like to thank all the parents whom have worked diligently with your child in the first quarter. As I mentioned earlier in the school year, that it would take the parent and teacher working together to create a better student (your child). I can see the parental involvement, so once again, thank you! Below you will find some if not all the things we will do this quarter. Note:Some dates are subject to change!

  • Reading: Book Reports. Students will be responsible for three book reports this quarter. The due dates are October 25 (How the Chipmunks Got his Stripes),November 15 (Ah, Music!), and December 6(Mr. Tanen’s Tie Trouble). These threebook reports will be from the reading stories.Remember to follow the guidelines that were given. Make sure all sentences are written in a complete sentence. This quarter we will not do every third story due to the stories that are being read. Stories are subject to CHANGE!Refer to the rubric for grading.
  • Language: Show and Tell is due the last Friday of each month. Students will be responsible for doing two Show and Tells. The due dates for these projects are October 27 and December 1(We are on Thanksgiving Break on the 24th). For the month of October, students can bring in an item that pertains to Halloween if he/she chooses. If student chooses not to bring in something for Halloween he/she must bring something educational to school. This should be something that other students can learn from such as: a map, educational game, old history items that have been passed on from generations, etc. Students must write a short paragraph on their item. Students must be familiar with the item. Doing this project is to help students with their speaking and listening skills. Students will be graded on presentation, being very familiar with their item (speaking) and the item. Refer to the rubric for grading.
  • Math: This quarter we will work on REGROUPING. Students will be responsible for creating five addition problems and five subtraction problems that consist of regrouping. Problems can’t come from the book! Students should make up their own problemsAfter the students have written and solved the problems right on the side of each problem, the student has to draw a model to show how he/she has arrived at his/her answer. You can refer to the following pgs.194and 242. Pay close attention to the steps on those pages! That is how each problem should be work out by those steps. You do not have to include all three steps for addition problems. I am mainly looking for step 2 for the addition problems. Doall four steps for the subtraction problems. This project should be done on loose-leaf paper. Be sure that drawings are done neatly! The addition project will be due October 18.The subtraction project will be due November 25.You can be creative by using construction paper to build your tens and ones if you do not want to draw it.Be creative! We will also have an in-class activity on regrouping.
  • Science:Starting October 12, we will begin UnitEChapter9Observing and Classifying Matterpgs.358-398. Students will need 3 pictures of each type of matter: solid, liquid, and gas. Students should have a total of 9 pictures. This project will be doneinclass. The pictures are Due on October26.In classproject, The Life Cycle of a Plant.
