Communications in the platoon consists of five TA-312, five ICOM’s and nine ASIP Radios. All Leaders will have 1 x ICOM w/ 2x batteries. TA-312s will be in the squad leader’s foxholes, and two at the platoon CP (one hot looped to the squad leaders foxholes, and one to the operational chain of commands CP). Challenge and password will change daily, times may vary according to the operational chain of command but will normally occur at 1900 hours daily. Signals and markings will be briefed in every order (refer to the ANCD for current use of smoke and signals), in the AA parachute flares and violence of action (yelling or whistles) signal an attack.

CONVOY PROCEDURES

Thirty minutes prior to moving out the platoon leader/platoon sergeant gives a convoy brief.

Areas to cover:

Route

Interval: hardball is 100m, unimproved roads is 25m

Speed: Hardball is the speed limit, unimproved roads is 20 MPH/METT-T

Catch up is 5 MPH faster than convoy speed

Vehicle break down: Asst. convoy commander polices them up and calls the platoon leader with the assessment of the situation

Break in contact: Asst. convoy commander reports this to the platoon leader ASAP. The vehicles still in the convoy will pull over and wait. The vehicles catching up will use the catch-up speed.

React to an ambush/air attack/minefield:

See chapter on battledrills

Platoon frequencies and call sign:

See chapter on communication

Asst. convoy commander:

Trail Vehicle

Order of march: X211–X212–X214–X213–X231–X215–X200–X223–X232–X224–X222–X225–X221

QUARTERING PARTY OPERATIONS

The platoon will occupy all Assembly Areas by force unless directed by PL/PSG to do a quartering party which, consists of the following;

X211 (M1113 W/RADIO, W/ SAW)

X200 (M998 W/RADIO, PLATOON LEADER)

X222 (M1113, W/ SAW)

The quartering party is responsible for securing the area, designating crew served weapon fighting positions (smoke generator positions if on a smoke mission or station positions on a decontamination line), and designating vehicle locations. Before the quartering party moves out of the Assembly Area (AA) they will get a current intelligence brief from the operational chain of command, and a current copy of the operations overlay. Ensure that a thorough map reconnaissance is completed prior to leaving the AA. If either friendly or enemy units have used chemical weapons the PL will conduct MOPP analysis prior to leaving the Assembly Area . If the enemy is encountered during the quartering party operation the quartering party must not become decisively engaged. Report back to the operational chain of command and let the platoon (-) know you are in contact.

The drivers of each vehicle must know where they go on the perimeter. Look at the correlation of the convoy order compared to occupying an assembly area. When done correctly the vehicles stop in the order of march. Numbers represent the vehicles' place in the convoy.

BSA OCCUPATION (see ANNEX A)

The platoon will occupy the BSA with the 307TH EN on the left flank and HQ/A 407TH FSB on our right flank. The maximum platoon front is 150 meters, with triple strand concertina wire.

PRIORITIES OF WORK

Security

We will use 33% security during priorities of work, which will consist of our crew served weapons. The squad leaders employ SAW’s. The platoon sergeant and the platoon leader check them.

Initial camouflage

A detail will be used consisting of 2 personnel from 1st and 2nd squads and 1 from 3rd squad. Drape commo nets over vehicles

Fighting positions/commo (see ANNEX F & G)

Designate fighting positions, get the green light from the platoon leader/platoon sergeant, then proceed to construct. We will try to get support from the engineers but we will not wait on them. Squad leaders assign sectors of fire and make sector sketches. Sketches are due two hours after occupation begins. The Platoon leaders driver is in charge of running the commo to the higher headquarters, commo will be established within one hour of occupation. The squad commo specialist is in charge of the wire being run from the foxholes to the CP.

Wire

A detail will be used consisting of 2 personnel from 1st and 2nd squads and 1 from 3rd squad. SAW’s will be pushed out in front of the wire for security while the wire is being emplaced. Wire will be emplaced as soon as the foxholes have soldiers digging them in. Keep in mind security is the number one priority. We will always lay in triple strand.

LP/OP

The PSG/commo person from 1st and 2nd squad will do the recon after the wire is being ran. The position should be reconed prior to the platoon sector sketch being turned to higher headquarters.

Survivability Bunker

The PSG will designate the location of a bunker big enough to support the personal not occupying fighting positions, at the time of indirect fire. The bunker must consist 18 inches of overhead cover.

Equipment maint

This includes weapons, commo, and PMCS

Personal hygiene

Chow

Rest plan

Priorities of work are centralized unless cleared by the platoon leader!

BSA OPERATIONS

See occupation of assembly area

Things to remember;

  1. Landline must be established within one hour of occupation.
  2. Squad Leaders report maintenance / logistical status to PSG NLT 1700 daily.
  3. PSG turns LOGSTAT (forms in field desk) to BDE S4 NLT 0700.
  4. BSA Tenant meeting is at 1800.
  5. Sector sketch is due to BSA TOC within 3 hours of occupation.
  6. max the platoon can cover is 200m to 250m, foxholes are 50m apart
  7. Always use NVG's in the foxhole during limited visibility periods.
  8. Re-supply for ammo, during an attack is located at the CCP with the PSG.

First squad has the left SAW pits, third squad has the center SAW pit, and second squad has the right SAW pits. If the perimeter is to small to accommodate 5 SAW pits, the third squad will drop back 50 meters between the second and third SAW pits and establish a QRF bunker. Triple strand concertina wire will be placed not closer than 35 meters to the SAW pits. Follow the priorities of work.

SMOKE OPERATIONS

A. PREPARATION

When preparing for a smoke mission these things must be done prior to leaving the AA;

  1. Check level of all fog oil tanks
  2. Check Vehicle fuel tanks
  3. Check TPU fog oil level
  4. Check Amount of Graphite on hand
  5. Squad leaders and PL conduct Map Recon
  6. Designate test fire time / location for weapons and smoke generators
  7. Check sensitive items
  8. Platoon Sergeant informs operational chain of commandof probable departure time and links in with the unit that will assume the perimeter
  9. Conduct a commo check
  10. Distribute Smk Pots

B. TASK ORGANIZATION

Task organization for smoke operations is by MTOE. First and second squads will attempt to leave one M1113 in reserve so that there is no break in smoke coverage when re-supplying or a change in weather conditions occurs. The reserve vehicle should be the squad leaders vehicle but this may not be possible due to maintenance requirements. Third squad will set up the fog oil / Fuel re-supply point at the nearest cover and concealed area to the smoke line.

C. TEST FIRE

Smoke generators will be test fired prior to getting to the smoke generator positions (see A. Preparation). Smoke operators need to test both generators for a minimum of two minutes, if each generator is not running smoothly and you can not correct the problem yourself in 5 minutes notify your squad leader. Squad leader request the mechanic through the platoon CP / X200. Once all smoke generators are in position the smoke control point will give the test smoke order (tactical situation permitting), this will allow the platoon to test smoke line communications, adjust smoke prior to the start of the smoke mission, and work out the last minute problems.

D. MOVEMENT TECHNIQUES (see FM 3-50, FM 3-101-1)

When mobile smoke is required leaders will have to work out movement patterns depending on the terrain. This must occur before the mission begins and must be rehearsed. Every smoke vehicle driver must know the smoke mission movement plan to insure success. Every smoke vehicle must have a compass, current map of operational area, and current graphics. During static smoke missions movement becomes somewhat easier. Operators still must have the items listed above in bold letters. When the smoke control point needs a vehicle to be moved in order to keep proper smoke coverage the chain should go like this; Smoke Control Point calls the squad leader who has the smoke generator position that needs to be adjusted. The smoke squad leader should be in reserve so he can go inform his smoke positions of shifts but due to re-supply this may not always be possible. The smoke control point may designate a runner as a last resort. It’s critical the smoke control vehicle has communication with the squad leaders at all times. It is imperative that the smoke control point is located so the smoke controller can see as much of the target area as possible. The platoon leader serves as the smoke controller, if more than one smoke control point is needed to see the target area the platoon sergeant will serve as the alternate smoke controller (i.e. with man pack dismounted)
