“How entrepreneurial organizations can leverage innovative business models and succeed in the new economy”.

Prof. Dr. Ing. Guy Bauwen

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

“Something is fundamentally wrong with the way innovation is addressed. Why is that the case? Why do mostfail and why are only so few successful? What do the winners do differently than the others?”

Dr. Bauwen describes critical myths and challenges that firms have to overcomeand he explains how to address critical innovation paradoxes. An ‘innovation compass’ will be introduced. This instrument provides an indication of a firm's likelihood of being able to successfully implement an innovative strategy and highlights areas of attention. The aim of this book is to change the way managers think about the route-to-market and to business success. The longitudinal research dialogues with several hundreds of practioners enabled to identify astonishing insights. Surprisingly, most managers use the same navigational tools whether confronted with highly turbulent or stable situations. This book will explain why managers cannot use existing maps if they embark on a new strategic innovation journey and give clear directions on what they can do to succeed.

Dr. Bauwen is Director Entrepreneurship & Innovation Development and Professor Entrepreneurship & Business Innovation, at the Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences, the Netherlands. He is Professor Entrepreneurial Marketing at the Flanders Business School in Antwerp, Belgium. Dr. Bauwen is chairman of the ‘Dutch Action Platform for Entrepreneurship’ and he is a facilitator of the ‘HEInnovate program’at the European Commission Department Education & Innovation. He is a results-driven leader, consultant, coach and change agent with extensive experience of driving profitable growth. “Bruggen naar het onvoorspelbare. Wegwijzer voor bewust omgaan met onvoorspelbaarheid bij strategische keuzes.”.

Prof. Em. Dr. Aimé Heene

Strategic managers are inevitably confronted with the unpredictability of the future environment of their firm. How can managers at best cope with this unpredictability when designing their firm’s strategy? To develop successful coping strategies “Bruggen naar het Onvoorspelbare” offers managers empirically validated theoretical frameworks to better understand unpredictabilities and their effects on the long term success of firms, and to systematically identify advisable patterns of behavior to manage unpredictability. These frameworks are complemented with an analysis of managerial practices in for-profit and non-profit organizations. These analyses show that managers are aware of unpredictabilities andthat they apply a broad range of coping strategies, including diverse forms of innovation, but that they could clearly benefit from methodologies that support them in overcoming bounded rationality in defining possible futures for their firm and in choosing appropriate patterns of behavior and techniques to cope with their volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous environment.

Therefore, the bookoffers a six-step methodology to successfully identify crucial unpredictabilities and coping strategies. This book concludes with a plea for complementing traditional “command and control” leadership with a leadership that develops the firm as an “adaptive organization”.

Dr. Heene (1950) is an Honorary Senior Full Professor of Ghent University. He taught strategic management for more than 30 years at several universities and higher education institutions such as the college of Europe in Bruges and the inno.com institute. Currently he provides management advice to small and medium sized organizations as a member of “Senior Consultants Vlaanderen”.
