LEARNING AIM C

2C.P5 Demonstrate communication skills through interactions in health and social care, describing their effects.

You will achieve this by taking part in two role plays. One will be informal and the other formal, these will be filmed.

I will complete a checklist during your two role plays which will identify and explain how you demonstrated the different communication skills

You will be mixing pass, merit and distinction together for this piece of work

One-One/ Group (complete separately)

  • Introduction, what did you have to consider before the role play. For example, Seating arrangements, what you discussed etc
  • You will also need to hand in some basic notes about your performance in each role play. E.g.

I was nervous and forgot to introduce myself but I did say hello. Mr Norton had poor eye sight so I made sure that I positioned the chairs so that he could see me easily. questions……………………….

2C.M3 Select and demonstrate communication skills through interactions in health and social care, explaining their effectiveness.

2C.D3 Select and demonstrate communication skills through one-to-one and group interactions in health and social care, evaluating their effectiveness and making recommendations for improvement.

These two criteria can be linked together. (you will be doing this for verbal skills and then non-verbal skills) Structure could be:

Explanation of the skills used and Effectiveness of the skills used

Talk about what the scenario was and which skills were needed and why. You can talk about your views on how it went, how you felt etc.

Example for explanation of skills

e.g. There were about eight people at the meeting held in the manager’s office. I know I have a quiet voice and had to make sure I spoke clearly so everyone could hear. I had to speak slower than I usually do, with a confident tone and pitch my voice a bit lower than usual because when I am nervous I can get a bit shrill.

e.g. For example, Paul is not fully blind, therefore he can still see me a little and I felt that it was important to show good active listening skills during the conversation. This meant that Paul was aware I was listening to him and understanding what he was telling me, it also meant that he can clearly see that I am engaged in the conversation

Example for effectiveness of skills

E.g.i think my communication were effective because I presented the plan and everybody seemed to understand what I was saying. I was effective in communicating my interest when I leaned forward and nodded in agreement.

Recommendations for Improvement (distinction)

What would you do differently if you were to do this again and why?

E.g. I could have been more effective in my use of gestures to reinforce what I was saying. Although he has poor eyesight he can see and a few more gestures would have helped.

Another example:

I could’ve improved paraphrasing in my conversation by repeating information she had given me in a different format, for example if I asked “do you see your children often?” the reply could’ve been “yes, I see my children often”. Next time I am in a conversation with an elderly person I will use more paraphrasing as I didn’t paraphrase as much as I had planned to, this shows that I have room for improvement.

The skills you need to talk about :
