President’s Message,

I would like to extend our greetings to all SOT members. I hope all of you are doing well during this busy time of year. We would like to invite each of you to attend the Annual Fall Meeting of the MRC/SOT, which will be held on Friday, November 12, 2010 at Eli Lilly in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana. Program Chairman, Dr. Christina Wilson, has organized an interesting scientific session that focuses on the theme “Investigative Toxicology: Concepts and Applications.” The program includes an outstanding panel of speakers from both academia and industry. We sincerely hope that you will be able to attend. The detailed program, registration materials, directions and lodging information for the meeting can be found elsewhere in this newsletter. For planning purposes and security access reasons, we ask that you register before 31 October 2010. We will not be taking registrations on the day of the meeting.

The 2010 Spring MRC-SOT Meeting was held at the Marriott Lincolnshire Resort on 21 May 2010. Approximately 60 people attended the meeting, which was focused on the topic “The Central Nervous System as a Target of Toxic Injury”. We would like to extend our thanks to all sponsors and individuals whose efforts helped make the meeting such a success. I would like to also thank Robin Guy who continues to help with the spring meeting. Her help over the past several years has been invaluable. Thank you so much Robin for all your help.

The Program Committee will soon be planning for the 2010 Spring Meeting that will be held at the Lincolnshire on 20 May 2011. We encourage members to submit ideas for possible topics and speakers for the meeting. Members are also encouraged to submit ideas for topics and possible venues for next year’s meetings. Please feel free to contact anyone on the council with your questions or ideas.

Please encourage your colleagues to become members of our chapter; one does not have to be a member of National SOT to become a member of our regional chapter. Membership and application materials are posted on our website.

Finally, our Nominating Committee, which will be headed by Past-President Walt Prozialeck, will be soliciting candidates to serve on the Executive Committee. Please consider running for office or serving on a committee. Our by-laws are posted on the web site and this is a great way to learn more about the duties of the officers and councilors. Since so much of the work of the Council and committees is conducted electronically, it has become much easier to participate.

I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on November 12th in Indianapolis.

Best Regards,

Matt Schroeder

Regional Chapter Graduate Committee (RG-GC)

Hello Midwest Regional Chapter! My name is Tammy Elmergreen and I am the Regional Chapter/Special Interest Group Graduate Committee (RC/SIG-GC) representative for the Midwest Regional Chapter (MRC)/SOT. As an ad hoc committee of the national Society of Toxicology, the RC/SIG-GC was created to serve as a student liaison between the regional and national SOT chapters in order to encourage student involvement in SOT. Our next MCR/SOT meeting is on Nov 12th, 2010 at Eli Lilly & Company in Indianapolis, Indiana and if you are a student with an active interest in toxicology we encourage you to attend! Even though you do not need to be a member of the Midwest Regional Chapter to attend the meeting there are many benefits to becoming a student member. Student members have access to several travel and research awards provided by MRC/SOT, such as the Victor A. Drill award for the best poster presentation and the Young Investigator Award for the most innovative research. You also benefit from networking with other scientists and potential employers at the regional meetings. Membership fees are only $10! This year, to further promote student involvement, if you are a full time student member and you bring along a student guest, the guest can attend the meeting for free! To become a member, you can either download an application form from our website (which does not require national membership) or designate your choice to join while paying national SOT dues. Please feel free to email me with any questions you have about regional and national SOT student awards, meetings or volunteer opportunities at the annual SOT meeting.

Hope to see you Nov. 12th!

SOT 50th Anniversary Celebration

As part of the 50th anniversary celebration of the Society of Toxicology at the 2011 meeting, each of the regional chapters has been invited to submit a historical poster. The poster will include information on founding members, current officers, membership distribution (academia, industry, government), awards, strategic initiatives (e.g., sponsoring courses), and projects that we have participated in with local universities or civic groups.

Although I can obtain much of this information from our current records, I would appreciate any help regarding strategic initiatives and special projects, along with any photos from past meetings.

Thanks,
