Design and shape beards and moustaches

PurposeThis unit standard is for people in the barbering trade wishing to develop design and shaping skills for beards and moustaches.

People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate knowledge of beard and moustache design and shaping; prepare to design and shape beard and/or moustache; shape beard and/or moustache; and complete follow-up actions.

1Definitions

legislative requirements refer to the obligations of the employer and/or employee under the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 and Health (Hairdressers) Regulations 1980;

workplace means barbering salon;

workplace requirementsmean the practices prescribed by management as being the quality standards for client contact and work organisation for a particular salon.

2Range

beard shaping refers to clipper over comb, scissors over comb, and clippers using attachments. Assessment of all three techniques is required;

moustache shaping refers to clipper and scissors work. Evidence is required for both.

3In this unit standard all work must comply with legislative requirements and must ensure optimum hair condition and maximum client comfort at all times.

4Beard and/or moustache shaping may include shaping and thinning sideburns that are not connected to a beard or moustache.

Elements and performance criteria

Element 1

Demonstrate knowledge of beard and moustache design and shaping.

Performance criteria

1.1Different face shapes are identified and their influence on beard shaping is described.

Rangea minimum of three face shapes.

1.2Different profiles are identified and their influence on beard and moustache design is described.

Rangea minimum of three profiles.

1.3The influence of neck proportions is described in terms of beard shaping.

1.4The influence of facial features on the moustache design is described.

Rangenose, mouth.

1.5Beard and moustache designs are illustrated and identified.

Rangemay include but is not limited to – goatee, handle bar, pyramid.

Element 2

Prepare to design and shape beard and/or moustache.

Performance criteria

2.1Discussion with the client identifies and confirms work needed.

2.2The hair and skinare analysedin accordance with workplace requirements.

Rangeelasticity, texture, density, skin irregularities, length, skin conditions, growth patterns.

2.3Selected design is compatible with hair and skin analysis and meets agreed outcome.

2.4The client is protected against water and/or product spillage and cut hair.

Rangetowel(s), cape, neck strip.

2.5Selected tools match requirements of agreed outcome and hair type.

Rangescissors, clippers;

may include – combs, razor, neck trimmers.

Element 3

Shape beard and/or moustache.

Performance criteria

3.1Shaped beard and/or moustache meets agreed outcome, and ensures client comfort requirements.

3.2The beard and/or moustache shape is completed within ten minutes.

Element 4

Complete follow-up actions.

Performance criteria

4.1Home haircare advice is provided that is consistent with completed service.

4.2Tools and equipment are sanitised in accordance with workplace requirements.

4.3Work area is cleaned and tidied in accordance with workplace requirements.

Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.

Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.

Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
