Purpose / This unit standard is for experienced people working in the glazing industry.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate knowledge of structural silicone glazing; clean and prepare substrates for glazing with structural silicone; glaze and apply sealant; and complete glazing with structural silicone.

Explanatory notes

1Definition

Worksite requirements–refer to instructions to staff on policy and procedures which are documented in memo or manual format and are available in the workplace. These requirements include– company specifications and procedures, work instructions, manufacturer’s specifications, product quality specifications, legislative requirements.

3Range

This unit standard applies to glazing glass to glass, and glass to metal.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Demonstrate knowledge of structural silicone glazing.

Evidence requirements

1.1Methods used to glaze with structural silicone glazing are identified and described in terms of their advantages and disadvantages.

1.2Process for cleaning and preparing substrates prior to glazing is identified and described in terms of worksite requirements.

Rangeprocess includes – remove oil, grease and soluble salts; remove traces of cleaning agents; protect surfaces from contamination.

1.3Process for priming substrates prior to glazing is identified and described in terms of worksite requirements.

Rangeprocess includes– selection of primer, primer application.

1.4Process for applying sealant is described in terms of worksite requirements.

Rangeprocess includes– fix glass securely, apply masking tape, seal voids, tool sealant into joints, remove masking tape and any spills, check sealant is cured.

1.5Process for testing structural silicone glazing is described in terms of worksite requirements.

Rangeprocess includes– weatherproofing, adhesion failure.

Outcome 2

Clean and prepare substrates for glazing with structural silicone.

Evidence requirements

2.1Materials and equipment are checked against the job specifications in accordance with worksite requirements.

2.2Any oil, grease and soluble salts are removed from substrates using agents compatible with substrate finish in accordance with worksite requirements.

2.3Any traces of cleaning agents are removed from substrate surfaces in accordance with worksite requirements.

2.4Surfaces are protected from contamination after cleaning and prior to application of sealant in accordance with worksite requirements.

2.5Substrates are primed, where required, in accordance with worksite requirements.

Rangeprimed includes–primer is applied only to those areas which can be sealed within the same working day to avoid contamination after priming and prior to sealant application.

2.6Sealant suitable for the application is selected in accordance with worksite requirements.

2.7Preparation is completed without injury to personnel or damage to products and equipment in accordance with the job specifications and worksite requirements.

Outcome 3

Glaze and apply sealant.

Evidence requirements

3.1Glass is securely fixed to minimise movement and checked for re-contamination prior to sealant application in accordance with worksite requirements.

3.2Primed surfaces are touch dry, masking tape is applied and all voids, gaps or joints are sealed in accordance with worksite requirements.

3.3Sealant is tooled into voids, gaps or joints in accordance with worksite requirements.

3.4Masking tape and any spills are removed without damage to, or contamination of, surfaces in accordance with worksite requirements.

3.5Sealant is fully cured prior to movement of the frame or panel in accordance with worksite requirements.

3.6Glazing is completed without injury to personnel or damage to products and equipment in accordance with the job specifications and worksite requirements.

Outcome 4

Complete glazing with structural silicone.

Evidence requirements

4.1Glazed frames or panels are weatherproofed, cleaned, and made free from residue in accordance with worksite requirements.

4.2Operations are completed without injury to personnel or damage to products and equipment in accordance with the job specifications and worksite requirements.

4.3Structural silicone glazingis tested for adhesion failure in accordance with worksite requirements.

4.4Customer is advised of any relevant maintenance requirements in accordance with worksite requirements.
