Title / Maintain protocols and procedures including distress monitoring in a defence telecommunications environment

Purpose / This unit standard covers knowledge and skills required for New Zealand Defence Force personnel to maintain protocols and procedures during shift and shift change over in a telecommunications environment.
People credited with this unit standard are able to:
–maintain operational procedures and protocols in a communications centre;
–maintain communications centre shift change over procedures and protocols; and
–monitor telecommunications distress signals and take appropriate action.

Outcomes and performance criteria

Outcome 1

Maintain operational procedures and protocols in a communications centre.

Performance criteria

1.1Communicate effectively with Communications Duty Officer at all times.

1.2Ensure signals conform to communications plans.

1.3Use internal and external communications systems.

1.4Report observations and emergency situations in accordance with procedures and protocols.

1.5Identify signs of fatigue and apply fatigue management strategies.

Outcome 2

Maintain communications centre shift change over procedures and protocols.

Performance criteria

2.1Conduct formal handover of communications equipment.

Rangemay include but not limited to – operational checks, update state boards.

2.2Complete formal shift handover briefing and documentation.

Outcome 3

Monitor telecommunications distress signals and take appropriate action.

Performance criteria

3.1Recognise and report telecommunications distress signals.

3.2Respond to distress signals and ensure continuity is maintained during shift and shift change over.
