Purpose / This unit standard is intended for people studying journalism in an off-job situation.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: take, select, and process photographs for news assignments; and produce a slide show for the internet from news assignments in accordance with the publishable standard.

These standards encompass – the Radio Code, the Free-to-Air Television Code, the Pay Television Code.

3 Definitions
captions refer to the words that identify the graphic’s content and names identifiable subjects. Captions may be a label, a sentence, or an extended caption;
minimum standards for professional journalism refers to the conventions under which the media operate and may include but are not limited to – stories of publishable standard, meet agreed deadlines and length and are legally, ethically and culturally sound;
news assignments refer to the collection of photographs that are compiled to accompany and enhance a news story;
platform refers to the delivery mode of internet;
publishable standard refers to the standard required by news media outlets for them to consider publishing the material. It will meet standards described in the industry texts and may include but is not limited to – news cycles; news rounds; breaking news; newsworthy person; newsworthiness; notes; platform; reliability, validity and usefulness; news values; introductions (impact, succinctness); structure (appropriate for story type and platform; arranged logically); grammar; spelling; punctuation; house style; word selection (jargon and clichés avoided); attribution (mix of direct and indirect quotes including paraphrasing); understanding (issues in context, key questions answered); editorial requirements; balance; fairness; language used in news media publications and broadcasting;
reliability, validity, and usefulness, when referring to a news source mean that the bona fides of the person, organisation or reference are established as a credible, knowledgeable, accurate, and authoritative source;
a slide show refers to a display of a series of chosen photographs.
Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Take, select, and process photographs for news assignments.
Range evidence is required for six photographs to illustrate the candidate’s own news stories.
Evidence requirements
1.1 A variety of photographs are composed to meet editorial, legal, and ethical requirements.
1.2 Photographs are produced for a variety of situations and layouts.
Range head shots, group shots, wide shots, close-ups, verticals, horizontals.
1.3 Captions are written ensuring information is accurate and complete.
Range grammar, punctuation, spelling, explains graphic’s content, names identifiable subjects, purpose of photograph, relation to news event.
1.4 Photographs are downloaded to a computer file using photo-processing software.
1.5 Photographs relevant to news stories, and of reproducible quality, are identified and a range of photographs is produced for final selection.
Range may include but is not limited to – headshots, group shots, wide shots, close-ups, verticals, horizontals.
1.6 Photo-processing software is used to prepare photographs for publication.
Range cropping, sharpening, colour enhancement, contrast balance, light balance, red-eye removal, file size, labelling, security of storage.
Outcome 2
Produce a slide show for the internet from news assignments in accordance with the publishable standard.
Range evidence is required for a minimum of ten photographs.
Evidence requirements
2.1 Photographs are taken and a selection are processed and used to prepare a slide show with captions for internet publication.
Range dominant feature, sharp, clear features, well lit, photographs are relevant to story angle, size, quality, acceptable image file format.
2.2 Photographs are composed to meet editorial, legal, and ethical requirements.
2.3 Photographs are downloaded to a computer file, using photo-processing software, and assembled into a slide show.
Range cropping, sharpening, colour enhancement, contrast balance, light balance, red-eye removal, file size, labelling, security of storage.
2.4 Photographs are produced for a variety of situations and layouts.
Range head shots, group shots, wide shots, close-ups, verticals, horizontals.
2.5 Captions are written ensuring information is accurate and complete.
Range grammar, punctuation, spelling, explains graphic’s content, names identifiable subjects, purpose of photograph, relation to news event.
2.6 Draft slide show presentation is reviewed in accordance with training establishment practices.
2.7 Slide show is corrected in accordance with the publishable standard and filed to meet training establishment practices.
