St. Mary’s Catholic Church

25th Sunday in Ordinary Time September 23, 2012

Dear parishioners,

The readings today are serious!! From the Book of Wisdom comes the teaching that there are people who are so intent upon getting what they want that they walk on others—going so far as to even plot evil and death for those who stand in their way. This is a prefiguring of Jesus who will be killed because of the jealousy of the religious leaders of his day. This is also a warning to us to keep our hearts pure—to seek to serve God and not ourselves.

James begins with the same theme, but he goes on to encourage the virtues we should practice: purity, peacemaking, gentleness, compliance, mercy, constancy, and sincerity. In one of his tapes Jeff Cavins says how willing we are to state our values. He challenges that it is much more difficult to practice virtues. Talk is cheap. Walking the talk is much more difficult and authentic.

Today’s gospel follows the story of Jesus driving out an evil spirit from the mute child and the Transfiguration. Now Jesus is intent upon teaching the apostles about his impending death. The apostles, however, are not paying attention. They are talking about who’s going to have the top spots in Jesus’ kingdom. They’ve seen what Jesus can do, and they want to be part of that—for their own gain and glory. When Jesus asks what they are talking about, the apostles are too embarrassed to tell him. And they can’t comprehend his foretelling his death. They are simply not at a teachable moment.

Am I at a space where the Holy Spirit can show me the places in my life where I am less than pure of heart? Where I am looking out for myself instead of for God or others?
