Explanatory notes

1This unit standard may be assessed against on-job or off-job. However, job specifications, equipment used, and job output must conform to current commercial industry practice.

2Competence must be demonstrated on a bordered cover with plain seams. Seams sewn must require matching of checkpoints.

3Definitions

Manufacturer’s instructions are instructions provided by manufacturers of substances, equipment, and machinery used in furniture making. These instructions may include details on safe and correct handling, use and storage of substances and/or details on substance properties. Examples are labels on substance containers, product data sheets, and operator’s manuals.

Worksite policies and procedures refer to documented policies and to documented or other directions provided to staff. These may include, but are not limited to, ways of managing health and safety, environmental considerations, quality, and production, and must conform to legislation. Examples include standard operating procedures, company health and safety plans, on-site briefings, and supervisor’s instructions. For the purposes of this unit standard worksite policies and procedures may also refer to the policies and procedures of an off-job training site.

Outcome 1

Demonstrate knowledge of walking foot sewing machines.

Evidence requirements

1.1Features of walking foot sewing machines are identified and their purpose is explained in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.

Rangespools, bobbins, feet, foot peddle, on-off switch, tension adjustment control, reverse control, foot lift, stitch adjustment control, needle.

1.2Basic sewing is explained in terms of purpose and technique in accordance with worksite policies and procedures.

Rangeback tacking, plain stitching, fabric feeding.

1.3Stitch size and tension adjustments are explained in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.

1.4Walking foot sewing machine maintenance requirements are explained in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions, and worksite policies and procedures.

Rangelubrication, knives, cleanliness, needles.

Outcome 2

Prepare to sew upholstery covers.

Evidence requirements

2.1Job specifications are obtained and explained in accordance with worksite policies and procedures.

Rangenumber of items, sewing sequence.

2.2Thread colour is selected in accordance with fabric colour and/or job specifications.

2.3Machine attachments are selected in accordance with job specifications.

Rangeneedle, bobbins, feet.

2.4Machine and work surfaces are made free of lubricants and debris.

Outcome 3

Prepare a walking foot sewing machine for sewing upholstery covers.

Evidence requirements

3.1Machine attachments are fitted to machine in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.

3.2Machine is threaded in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.

Rangebobbins, needle, spools.

3.3Seam is sewn and stitch size and tensions are checked and adjusted in accordance with worksite policies and procedures.

Outcome 4

Operate a walking foot sewing machine to sew upholstery covers.

Evidence requirements

4.1Sewing machine is operated in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.

4.2Beginning and end of seams are back tacked in accordance with worksite policies and procedures.

4.3Output of machine is monitored and adjusted where necessary in accordance with job specifications.

4.4Seams are sewn in accordance with job specifications.

Rangestraight, even seam allowance, no puckering, even stitch size, checkpoints matched.

4.5Work area is left clean, clear, and safe in accordance with worksite policies and procedures.
