24ndSunday in ordinary time

Sir 27:30-28:9/Rom 14:7-9/Mt 18:21-35

“Forgive your neighbor’s injustice; then when you pray, your own sins will be forgiven. Could anyone nourish anger against another and expect healing from the Lord? Could anyone refuse mercy to another like himself, can he seek pardon for his own sins?... Think of the commandment, hate not your neighbor; remember the Most High’s covenant, and overlook faults.”… “Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often must I forgive?”

On this day, when we commemorate one of the worst days in our nation’s history, the Word of God challenges us to look at the events through a gospel lens.

For many, those who lost loved ones when the towers fell, or those who have died because of sickness resulting from 9/11, it is a day when we open wounds once more. The scriptures offer us another approach telling us of action to be taken, forgiveness to be expressed, and the invitation to move from evil and retaliation to nonviolence and love.

After ten years, we are called to be ambassadors of nonviolence and instruments of peace. The evil actions of some do not warrant blanket condemnation and God’s word today should be taken quite seriously. The great power we have is the ability to give forgiveness, a forgiveness without bitterness. It is costly, but it is the only remedy at hand to allow us to be free.

This day, hallowed as are December 7, 1941 and June 6, 1944, becomes for us a moment for prayer, gratitude to those who tried to help, and a resolve that through our peace efforts, nothing like this will happen again. May those who died, know Christ’s embrace and peace.

May we seek and find healing, and perhaps after reflecting upon these words, help others to do the same.

Dear Friends in the Lord,

Since it’s opening in 1896, the message of Jesus Christ has been proclaimed, lived and celebrated by the dedicated and committed priests of the Archdiocese of New York who have studied and received their theological education and formation at Saint Joseph’s Seminary.

Without a doubt, one of the many blessings of this Archdiocese is it’s extraordinary seminary system: Saint Joseph’s Seminary, our major theologate located in the Dunwoodie section of Yonkers; the Saint John neumann Residence Seminary, a pre-seminary program now located in Douglaston, Queens, for those attending college or in need of courses prior to entering major seminary; and the Cathedral Preparatory Program for high school men considering a vocation to the priesthood. Fortunately, the People of God of the archdiocese have never ceased to be as supportive as they can be of their seminary system.

With this letter, I invite you to tmake a sacrificail offering to the annual seminary collection, which will be conducted in our parishes over the weeekend of September 17 and 18. The cost of preparing future priests is daunting, and for this reason we count on your support. With it, we are able to continue our solid tradiation of excellence in the formation and academic training of candidates for the priesthood.

What fond memories we all have of the visits of the two succsessors of St. Peter to the seminary;Bl. Pope John Paul II in 1995 and Pope Benedict XVI three years ago. Christ has given us His Chuch, with the guft of the priesthood to perpetuate the Eucharist, to preach the Gospel, and

to forgive sins.

Please know how very grateful I am for whatever you are able to do in assisting our seminarians in becoming your good, dedicated, and holy priests one day soon.

With prayerful best wishes, I am, very truly yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Timothy M. Dolan

Dear Friends,

This Sunday, the tenth anniversary of the tragic events of 9-11-01, there are many memorial services and concerts around the city. We remember those who died that day and subsequently from illnesses caused by the destruction of the Twin Towers at a special Requiem Mass for the Dead at 11:30 a.m. The lovely "Requiem Mass" by Gabriel Faure should be a vehicle for the appropriate sadness we still feel so deeply after all this time. Many of you witnessed the destruction of the Towers and mourned the wonton destruction of life on 9/11. As Catholics, we do what is most meaningful for us--we remember and pray for all who lost their lives. We trust that God in His mercy will take into heaven all who died.

John McGuire, O.P.

Prayer for 9/11 Anniversary
Almighty God, you have committed to us the ministry of reconciliation of your son, Jesus Christ; give us the confidence in your power to forgive, as your son forgave humankind from the Cross. in his name, bless and enable us to be witnesses for your forgiveness at work where we live. Unite us in a sacred fellowship to heal the hostilities we see, and give us the grace to love another in the name of Jesus Christ and to rejoice in the eternal fellowship of his disciples. Amen
