22nd California Mission Project Due Dates

Individual class work

  1. Research Spanish goals and mission history to find out questions for our “Need to Know” list. Due Friday, January 6.
  2. Complete “What’s a Good Place for a Mission?” worksheet. Due January 13.
  3. Research examples of mission architecture and sketch ideas for your own mission. Sketch a church façade and a floor plan of the building and grounds for your mission. Due January 31.
  4. Complete “22nd Mission Proposal Planning Notes” worksheet and rough draft. Due February 10.
  5. IMPORTANT: Final Draft of persuasive letter to the Archbishop of Mexico. Due February 15.

Group work

  1. Read the textbook and handouts to understand the Spanish goals and history of missions. Share our information with other teams. Review which questions are answered on our Need to Know list. Due Friday, January 6..
  2. Create a large physical map of Northern California including coastal mountains, major rivers, lakes, and bays. Other mission locations, presidios, and other major settlements by 1818 must also be shown. The map must have an accurate scale. The map should be big enough so all team members can work on it together. Due January 25.
  3. Combine each team member’s façade designs and mission layout into a group design and layout for the new mission. Due February 7.
  4. Optional: Create a 3-D model or Minecraft version of your mission. Due February 17.
  5. Write a group proposal to present to the Archbishop when he arrives in our classroom. Due February 22. (Date may change if Archbishop is delayed.)

Requirements for the Proposal:

  1. A map showing the location of your mission. (See above.)
  2. A set of “blueprint” designs of your new mission. A model or Minecraft is optional. (Keep it small!)
  3. A written and oral presentation to the Archbishop and other Spanish representatives. Use the Planning Notes to guide your presentation.
