Embark on an outrigger and sail towards the Gili Islands. Gili Air, Gili Meno and Gili Trawangan are three small islets with white sand beach located off the north coast of Lombok that evoke images of the kingdom of coconut queen. There are no motorized means of transportation in this laid-back paradise and the three islands are so small that they can be surrounded by bicycle or horse cart.

Arrive at Gili Meno Island for inspection at Karma Reef.

Ride a Cidomo (a small horse-drawn carriage) to inspect the Mahamaya, featuring 15 Pool Suites, 2 Beach Front Suites and 2 Beach Front Villas. Enjoy your lunch served at the resort’s beachfront restaurant.

The western shore has some of the best snorkelling, and with a bit of luck, sea turtles can be seen at this spot. Other small shops around the area also sell clothes, silver and gold. This market is where all communities blend together.

To get a glimpse of Eastern Indonesia during the short inspection to Lombok, visit West Nusa Tenggara Museum which hosts various historical items and artifacts found in Lombok and Sumbawa Island. With its small but quite comprehensive collections on the geology, flora, fauna, archeology, ethnography, history and crafts of the region it gives it provides a good overview over this part of Eastern Indonesia.

Lingsar Temple in the outskirts of Mataram, exemplifies the fascinating syncretism between Balinese Hinduism and Lombok’s mystical take on Islam, the so called Waktu Telu. Built in 1714 by King Anak Agung Ngurah the beautiful complex nestled among rice fields hosts different shrines with locational relationships to both islands’ holy mountains. With a bit of luck you’ll be able to toss a coin over your head, hitting the pond with holy water behind you. The myth says that this helps to make a wish come true. Try to attract the holy eel said to live in the irrigation system of the holy water springs with a boiled egg. It is a rare occasion that the eel will show up, but if it does, then this is to be seen as sonsy.

Continue to Tetebatu for late lunch at a basic local restaurant.

Set off for short trek and make your way across the rice fields and plantations and fruit gardens. Depending on the season different crops are grown, such as chilies, tobacco, and fruits like Rambutan, Jackfruit or Durian and Guavas. Farmers are busy with seeding, ploughing or harvesting and a trek through the fields and forests gives and ideas of the everyday life in a rural community. Pass a monkey forest, where with a bit of luck you may see the primates jumping from tree to tree, before you arrive at the scenic Tibu Topat waterfall.

Yet, the water will not pour out of the kettle, and actually, this sort of kettle serves the water remaining fresh and not being accessed by flies.
