2017 Canada Summer Games Triathlon Team Selection

The Canada Games (CG) selection information meeting for athletes and parents will be held on Dec 4th at 2pm in the Armbrae Academy Gym. A notice advertising the meeting will be posted on the Triathlon Nova Scotia website, Facebook page and an email will be sent to all 2016 TNS members.

Canada Games Selection Committee:

The CG Selection Committee consists of three (3) members:

1) CG Triathlon Team Head Coach

2) CG Triathlon Team Manager

3) A person to be appointed by the TNS Board of Directors

Eligibility:

·  All athletes must hold a valid 2017 TNS race license/annual membership

·  All athletes must be a resident of Nova Scotia as outlined in Appendix 1 of the 2017 Canada Summer Games Triathlon Technical Package (CSG TTP).

·  All athletes must be at least 16 years of age and no older than 19 years of age as of December 31, 2017 (born between January 1, 1998 and December 31, 2001 inclusively). Athletes under 16 years of age may be deemed eligible for the Canada Games subject to Appendix 5 of the CSG TTP. The Canada Summer Games age range for triathlon is aligned with the International Triathlon Union Junior category.

·  All athletes must sign a Declaration of Intent provided by TNS before participating in any of the team selection camps, races, etc.

CG Selection Process:

Prequalification: Athletes who are selected by Triathlon Canada to be on the National Junior Elite or U23 National team for any 2017 Junior International Triathlons will be automatically named to the Nova Scotia CG Triathlon Team.

Note: Self-selection to the National Age Group team does not prequalify an athlete to the Nova Scotia CG Triathlon Team

Subject to availability, up to one spot may be allocated per sex to the first eligible athlete who finishes in the top 20% of any Jr. Elite draft legal triathlon with at least ten starters. If the first eligible athlete has previously qualified for Team Nova Scotia, the second eligible athlete can qualify if they finish in the top 20%.

The selection process will take place in two phases.

Phase 1 comprises two selection camps in which athletes need to meet time standards in the swim, bike, and run. Phase 2 will comprise a series of three triathlon races. Details about Phase 2 selection races will be made available before the second selection camp.

Phase 1: Team Selection Camp Dates

Athletes must attend either Camp 1 or Camp 2.

●  Run – Indoor track (5,000m)

●  Bike – CompuTrainer (10km)

February TBD, 2017 | CG Core Team Selection Camp 2

●  Swim – Indoor pool – short course (800m)

●  Run – Indoor track (5,000m)

●  Bike – CompuTrainer (10km)

Athletes who have met all three time standards will be eligible to continue to a mandatory Core Team Training Camp. Athletes who missed the swim and/or run qualifying times by 5% or less in Camp 1 and Camp 2 are eligible for a final opportunity to achieve the time standards at the Core Team Training Camp. There will be no third opportunity to make the bike standard.

●  Bike – Falmouth Flyer Road Race

Particaption in each camp is $100 payable to TNS. The cost of all camps is included in the annual TNS Development Squad fee ($250)

·  Athletes must meet all three minimum time standards outlined in the table below at either Camp 1 or Camp 2.

·  Time standards may be re-attempted. Only athletes who have attempted the time standards and failed to meet them by less then 5%, may attempt them again at the third and final camp.)

·  Achieving time standards may be divided up over each of the camps (i.e. not all three standards must be attempted at the same camp.

·  Applications to attempt the time standards on alternate dates must be submitted to the Canada Games Head Coach by December 11, 2016. Alternate dates must fall between the first and second camp. Approval for alternate dates will only be granted for exceptional circumstances such as out of Province post-secondary exams. Schedule conflicts with other sport related training or competitioins will not be considered an expectional circumstance. Final determination of exceptional circumstance rests with the CG Selection Committee.

Appeals process:

During the selection races, all race result protests must be done at the event with the Head Triathlon Technical Delegate. Protests must follow the Triathlon Canada appeals procedure. The decision of the Technical Delegate or Competition Jury will be considered final.

Canada Games Selection Appeals Committee (CGSAC):

The TNS board will appoint a three person appeals committee to address any appeals that an athlete may have with the implementation of the selection process. If an athlete does not agree with outcome of the the 2017 NS Canada Games Team selection process , they will have 48 hours from the time the results/decisions are posted on the TNS website (under News Releases) to submit their appeal in writing. Appeals should be submitted to and they will be forwarded to the Appeals Committee.

The Appeals Committee will respond to the athlete within 48 hours

Decision process:

Athletes named to the 2017 Nova Scotia Canada Games Triathlon team will be announced within 4 days of the final selection race.
