2017-2018 Graduate Scholarship Application

Scholarships for which the UVic School of Nursing are eligible to make nominations are listed below and fall into two categories:

A)Those that are available only to students in the School of Nursing

B)Those that are available to several specific departments/schools or to all departments/schools

Please note that awards in Category B are restricted to one nomination per department and the following guidelines are in effect in order to standardize the information for all nominees:

•Faculty comments are restricted to one page; additional pages will not be accepted

•Student CVs must be limited to one page; additional pages will not be accepted

•An unofficial transcript of the most recent coursework must be attached

•The GPA box does not have to be completed

•NEW – Cassels Shaw Graduate Fellowship requires budget form (attached)

Please note that Category A awards do not require the submission of an unofficial transcript.

The terms of reference for each award are listed on the following pages. Please fill out the student comment fields for each of the scholarships that you are applying for. Comments must be relevant to the terms of reference for each individual award for which you are applying. Applications in which the comments section for each award has been copied and pasted will not be accepted.

Once you have completed all applicable student fields the application must be forwarded to a faculty reference that will fill out the required faculty fields (which they will need to return to you so that you can submit one package). Only include information that refers to awards you are applying for. You may delete the rest.

Please note that the faculty support box can be filled out by a previous instructor from an accredited post-secondary educational institution.

Attention to spelling, grammar, and presentation will be taken into consideration.

The paragraph of each award recipient will be shared with the donor.

One or more graduate scholarships are awarded to outstanding full or part-time students in the School of Nursing. Preference will be given to students in the nursing practitioner program and the nurse educator option. Sisters of St. Ann Scholarship in Nursing

Harold and Myra Thompson Memorial Scholarship - A scholarship is awarded to a graduate student in the School of Nursing who is pursuing studies that will lead to educating future nurses. Zillah (Hobart) Wood Graduate Scholarship in the School of Nursing

One or more scholarships are awarded to full or part-time outstanding graduate students in the School of Nursing. Preference will be given to students interested in geriatric nursing and/or early infant care. Jessie H. Mantle Fellowship in Nursing

A fellowship of $5,000 is awarded to an outstanding graduate student in the School of Nursing who is employed in, studying or researching the area of gerontological clinical nursing practice. The work should be directly applicable to the care of older adults (usually defined as 65+ years) and have the potential to affirm or improve direct care. The recipient must demonstrate a commitment to the field of gerontological nursing practice by submitting an application statement detailing what the student is doing to improve clinical practice in gerontological nursing (e.g. presenting research at conferences, publishing articles, serving in leadership roles in geriatric practice, conducting research to inform clinical practice). Selection of the recipient will be made by the Graduate Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the School of Nursing.

Royal Jubilee Hospital Nursing Alumni Association

One or more awards are given to academically outstanding students enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in the School of Nursing. Preference will be given to students with demonstrated financial need who are former Royal Jubilee Hospital School of Nursing graduates, or their families, in perpetuity.

Albert Hung Chao Hong Scholarship

One or more scholarships based on academic excellence are awarded to undergraduate and graduate students attending the University of Victoria who are citizens of Hong Kong or Mainland China.

Discovery Program for Youth & Family Addiction Services Scholarship

One or more scholarships are awarded to students registered in a graduate program in social work, child and youth care, nursing, or counselling psychology and whose research or study is alcohol and/or drug issues. Selection of the recipient(s) will be chosen by the Graduate Awards committee.

General Graduate Scholarships

The number of scholarships offered and the value of each will vary from year to year based on donations received. One or more scholarships are awarded to outstanding graduate students entering or continuing in the Faculty of Graduate Studies. Mrs. Annie Greskiw Graduate Award

An award is made annually to a highly qualified master's or doctoral student doing thesis research on a health related subject. The award is valued at $2,500 and may be held concurrently with a major award such as Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council Post-Graduate Scholarship, a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Fellowship, or a University of Victoria fellowship. Selection of the recipient will be made by the Graduate Awards committee on the recommendation of the dean of the relevant faculty.

Ray Hadfield Memorial Fellowship

An endowment fund with $2175 available for 2015/16 may be awarded to a graduate student whose project, thesis or dissertation or related to research or treatment of rheumatic diseases. Selection will be made by the Graduate Awards Committee in consultation with the Arthritis Society.

Martlet Chapter IODE Graduate Scholarship for Women

A scholarship to the value of $400 will be awarded to a woman student with high standing who is entering the second year of a master's program.

Cassels Shaw Graduate Fellowship – NEW

One or more fellowships each year will be awarded to outstanding graduate students, entering or continuing in the Faculty of Graduate Studies. The recipient will be selected on the basis of high academic achievement and demonstrated financial need. Students must be nominated by their academic department, and complete a budget assessment form. Selection of the recipient will be made by the Graduate Awards Committee of the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Howard E. Petchand David F. StrongResearch ScholarshipsSeven Howard E. Petch Research Scholarships and one David F. Strong Scholarship of $7500 each will be available to graduate students who have been successful in receiving University of Victoria Fellowships valued from $15,000 - $20,000 or major Canadian national awards valued between $15,000 and $25,000. These awards are tenable for one year only. Selections will be made by the Graduate Awards committee.

Nancy Lee Graduate Scholarship

One or more scholarships are awarded to graduate nursing students in the Faculty of Human and Social Development who are in the School of Nursing, the School of Health Information Science or the School of Public Health and Social Policy and who are interested in working in Indigenous communities. Preference will be given to students who can demonstrate community service. Selection of the recipients will be made by the Graduate Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Human and Social Development.
