The purpose of the Hilda and Herschel Rich Endowment is to support student leadership development with a societal impact, including both individual and group activities, through volunteerism, internships, research projects, and other relevant activities.

Any proposal meeting the broad goals of the Endowment will be accepted, but particular attention is given to proposals that support the Houston community.

Graduating seniors can apply for post-graduate support up to $5,000 for a summer project that aligns with the purpose of the Endowment. Funding for basic lodging, meals, and transportation costs can be included in your budget. However, the Endowment does not fund wages or stipends.

A successful funded project application will:

  • Make a distinctive impact upon society,
  • Raise awareness among the Rice community, and
  • Foster and encourage leadership and creativity among Rice students.

Essays
Please provide a 100 word statement including the funding total being requested and a summary of your project / For example, I am requesting $2500 to collaborate with Plant It Forward on developing five urban gardens in three Houston neighborhoods. These areas are considered food desserts, lacking grocery stores within a seven miles radius from the neighborhood. Land for the five urban gardens has been donated to Plant It Forward and the funding requested will go toward the supplies needed for soil, soil preparation, planting, and tools for garden upkeep.
For the following questions please quantify the impact of your project. For example, what are the outcomes (quantitative or qualitative) of this project? How many people or organizations will be impacted? How many hours of service? Limit your answers to 500 words per question.
What is the distinctive impact of this project upon society? Address in particular the systemic issues and broader social context of your project.
How will this project raise awareness among the Rice community? Provide examples of what you will do to raise awareness on campus.
How will this project encourage leadership and creativity for you? What do you hope to learn and how will it help you develop current skills and foster new ones.
Faculty/Staff: Please address how this project demonstrates student ownership and innovation from project conceptualization through development and implementation.
Funding
How is this project currently being funded? How much funding have you currently secured for this project? Where else have you applied for funding? Is this project part of an on-going funded program at Rice University? If so, please explain the funding in-place and why you need to seek additional funds from Rich Family Endowment.

Budget
Attach a detailed budget to this document. Budgets may include supplies, printing, transportation, basic lodging, meals, etc. The Endowment will not cover costs related to wages or stipends. For media equipment, please check with the Digital Media Center before requesting funding. All supplies will be the property of Rice University following your proposed project.
Letter of Support
In ApplyNow! submit the email contact for the community partner who will be writing the letter of support. The letter of support must address the following points:
1. Identification of the value of this project for your organization;
2. Ways in which Rice students will be involved and build the capacity of the organization/project; and
3. Contact information for a staff member at the agency that will act as a liaison to the student organization or program.
