A pretty powerful theme for the 2016 National Leadership Conference in San Diego, California.

Washington State traveled with over 28chaptersto San Diego to participate in the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America National Leadership Conference July 3-7, 2016.

Of those chapters we had 125 delegates, 31 advisers, 12 guests and chaperones, and 2 State Staff for a total of 170.

The National Leadership Conference drew approximately8,500 members and advisers.

Members arriving early had time to explore wonderful San Diego sights like the Aquatica Water Park, Old Town San Diego and of course, eat at the Hard Rock Café.

Members couldn’t turn down the opportunity to visit the beautiful beaches. We saw some sunburned delegates AND advisers upon their return.

The San Diego Zoo is a conservation program in action. Members got face to face with Pandas, giraffe, polar bear and many other animals – some of which are on the endangered list. It really gave our members an appreciation for the zoo’s outstanding efforts.

Our delegates were met with Washington State Officer Beach Bums ready to “Empower” each member through spirited energizers and recognition at the Washington State Meetings.

State Officers hosted 2 Washington State meetings where delegates received recognition for STAR Event participation, Power of One achievements, Life Smarts/Knowledge Bowl, Spotlight on Projects participation and National Program Awards. The delegates also cast their vote approving the National Officer Candidate recommendations made by our Voting Delegates.

The National Opening Session is always exciting. Washington filled every seat in our section with enthusiasm and cheers. Opening Session included National Recognition and Motivational Speaker, Colin Ryan. Colin used his comedy style to bring financial education to life for our delegates.

Delegates attended Leadership Academy gaining important skills to take back to their chapters. State Officers attended their State Networking Workshops touching on Programs, making Connections, Membership, Finances, Competitive Events and the President’s Network. Advisers and members alike enjoyed the many Program and Exhibitor Workshops held during the conference.

For the 2nd Year in a row, Selah High School made it to the final round of competition during the Business Session in Life Smarts/Knowledge Bowl. They competedin front of the entire national delegation and again took first place.Selah you were AMAZING!!

One of the more intense sessions during the conference was at the Business Session. Members and Advisers were on the edge of their seats watching Parliamentary Procedure in action. Voting Delegates passed a motion to “Indefinitely Postpone” any action on the National Bylaw Proposal to reduce the number of FACSE Adult positions on the National FCCLA Board of Directors. Our Delegates left this session having learned the importance of every vote cast.

STAR Event competition occurred over two ½ days during National Leadership Conference. Over 4,500 competitors participated in STAR Events. Washington had individuals and teams competing in 26 National eventswith Displays

And Portfolios. Washington only sends our top placing State Gold Medal teams, so once our competitors arrive at Nationals, THEY ARE ALWAYS PREPARED.

Wehad107 delegates qualifying to compete at the national level.

Of those 107 competitors, 67 individuals earned Gold, 37 earned Silver and 3 earned Bronze.

With the flash of the cameras and the cheers from our state, competitors walked across the stage and received their medals.

This year Washington State claimed three of the coveted 7, first place National Program Awards. This is quite an accomplishment because no other state took 3, first place awards!

Asotin High School was the 1st place National FACTS Program winner with their project “Just Drive, a lot can happen in five seconds”.

Kittitas Secondary School took 1st place in the National Career Connections for their project “Empowering Connections for Future Careers”.

And finally, Puyallup High School was the 1st place winner in National Leadership Service in Action for their project “No Mountain Too High”.

Congratulations to these outstanding National Program winning Chapters.

Spotlight on Projects gives chapters an opportunity to displayone of their outstanding chapter projectsduring the Exhibitsat the conference. Anyone can apply to participate. Washington had Spotlight on Project Displays from Asotin High School, Kittitas Secondary School, Puyallup High School and West Valley High School, Spokane.

The Closing Session is a time for final recognition, a Conference Highlights slide show,announcement of the 2016-17 National Executive Council and their Installation. With the Gala immediately following, most delegates come dressed in their finest.

Surfin’ USA was a Gala to remember. Music, Games, Entertainment, Dancing and, of course good friends.

Here’s to you Advisers. You help make the most surprising and awesome leaders out of some pretty unbelievable student starters. Without your empowering encouragement, advice and efforts, student leaders, like myself, would not be able to stand in front of you here today.
