2016 Keep America BeautifulWilliam Nash National Award Application

Keep America Beautiful is the iconic nationalnonprofit organization that inspires and educates people to take action every day to improve and beautify their community environment. We envision a country where every community isa clean, green, and beautiful place to live.

A pioneer in establishing the national Keep America Beautiful Affiliate Network, William (Bill) Nash worked tirelessly with community leaders across the country. The Keep America Beautiful William Nash National Award recognizes a new Keep America Beautiful affiliate (completed affiliation within the last three years) for its outstanding achievement in implementing the Keep America Beautiful Behavior-Change System in their community.

How to Nominate an Affiliate: Any affiliate certified in the past three years that has demonstrated the aforementioned achievements is eligible to be nominated or self-nominate.

Executive Summary Guidelines:

  • Microsoft Word document.
  • Summaries must be typed and answers should highlight the number header included below, e.g.,1. Background, before answering questions in that section.
  • Include the nominated affiliate name and state in the header of each page.
  • Do not exceed fourpages and be sure to number the pages.
  • Use no less than one-inch top, bottom, and side margins.
  • Use minimum 11-point font.
  • Double-space your summary.
  • Please do not use clip art or colored ink in this portion of your entry.

Executive Summary Questions:

  1. Background (15 points). Provide a brief history of the nominated affiliate's community, including how interest in Keep America Beautiful affiliation first began. Has the organization accomplished the original goals developed for a Keep America Beautiful affiliate?
  1. Achievements (60 points). Describe the affiliate’s major achievements since completing affiliation. Include a description of the activities that took place to obtain results. Has the affiliate worked in all three impact areas of End Littering, Beautify Communities, and Improve Recycling? What are the measurable results including baseline Community Appearance Index, Litter Index,and Cost-Benefit Analysis? Describe the affiliate’s use of behavior-change strategies, e.g., written expectations (ordinances and policies); consequences (incentives and/or enforcement); tools and technology; and education. Include information on the implementation of Keep America Beautiful Programs and/or resources, e.g., Great American Cleanup, America Recycles Day, Waste in Place, etc.
  1. Partnerships (20 points). Describe the nominated affiliate’s community partnerships. Include how civic groups, local businesses, individuals, or others were involved with the affiliate's achievements.
  1. Summation (5 points). Providetwo to three sentences summarizing how the nominated affiliate has successfully implemented the Keep America BeautifulBehavior-Change System and how those efforts have made their community a cleaner, greener, more beautiful place to live.

Supplemental Materials: Include up to three pieces of supplemental material to substantiate the responses in the written executive summary.

Material may include:

  • Photos (that illustrate engagement or impact) PLEASE NOTE: photo collageswill not beaccepted.
  • Press clips.

Awards Submittal: Email Executive Summary and Supplemental Materials (no more than 3 pieces) to by close of business onOct. 1, 2016. Compress photos and supplemental materials so the total size of the email is under 20MB. Include in the Subject Line the Award Category for which you’re applying.

Judging: Winner will be selected by a volunteer panel of current and past affiliate and Keep America Beautiful leaders, and when applicable Keep America Beautiful National Staff.Applications from affiliates who are not in Good Standing with Keep America Beautiful will not be considered. Judges may request additional materials. Winner will be notified by Dec. 1, 2016. The Award will be presented at Keep America Beautiful’s Annual National ConferenceJanuary 24-26, 2017 in Washington, D.C.
