Game 12 - May 5th, 2017 @ Stillwater (game two of a double header)

Stillwater - 5

MV - 3

Pitching Highlights:

  • Freshman Ben Kettlehut made his B team debut (and first start at any level) and pitched 5 ⅔ strong innings giving up 5 runs (3 earned). Kettlehut is evidently a ground ball pitcher, Pony batters hit 15 against his pitching. If not for a 2 error inning in the top of the 6th that led to 3 Stillwater runs, Kettlehut would have earned his first B team win.
  • Mateo Cisneros finished off the top of the 6th, getting the Pony 8 hitter to pop out on 3 pitches.
  • Alec Wahlin pitched a scoreless top of the 7th, scattering 2 hits and striking out 2.

Defensive Highlights:

  • Other than the 2 error top of the 6th, the Mustangs played excellent defense.
  • Brian Tebbutt (CF) tracked down a gapper to the fence in right center in the top of the 4th, fired a laser to Mateo Cisneros (SS) who threw a perfect relay to Ike Mezzenga who tagged out the Pony batter attempting to stretch a double into a triple.
  • Kameron Manning (RF) made a pretty diving catch in the top of the 7th sprinting towards the infield.

Offensive Highlights:

  • Although the Mustangs had plenty of quality at bats, they couldn’t string enough together to produce runs, 8 baserunners were left stranded.
  • Mateo Cisneros went 2-3 with an RBI.
  • Matt VanBeusekom went 1-2 with a ROE, BB and RBI

Ancillary Highlights:

  • A raise up to B team managers Jane Baird and Gabby Eubanks who cheerfully spent a Friday afternoon and evening with the team and made a couple dozen chocolate chip cookies that the boys hungrily devoured after the games.

Game 10 - May 3rd, 2017 @ MVHS

Centennial - 7

MV - 6

Pitching Highlights:

  • Freshman Sean Goldman made his second B squad start and lasted 3 innings giving up 7 runs (3 earned). Goldman scattered 4 hits but walked 5 and wasn’t helped by the 2 Mustang errors committed behind him.
  • Ike Mezzenga started the 4th and pitched a 4 inning gem to finish out the game, allowing 1 run on 2 hits and 3 walks while striking out 4.

Defensive Highlights:

  • After committing 2 physical and 3 mental errors that resulted in runners advancing or scoring in the first 3 innings and digging themselves a 7-0 hole, the Mustangs settled in and played solid defense the rest of the game.
  • Mateo Cisneros (SS) made the play of the season (so far) in the top of the 5th sprinting to shallow right field, laying out and catching a shallow pop fly in full extension.
  • Jonah Sparks (2B), Mateo Cisneros (SS) and Alec Wahlin (1B) turned a web gem 4-6-3 double play to end the top of the 7th. With a runner on first a Cougar pinch hitter laced a one hop liner to Sparks who scooped the ball cleanly, delivered a great feed to Cisneros who threw a strike to a fully stretched Wahlin.
  • John Abercrombie (C) turned in a solid performance behind the plate, blocking everything (no passed balls) and throwing out a Cougar runner attempting to steal second in the first inning.

Offensive Highlights:

East Ridge - 12

MV - 13

Pitching Highlights:

  • Alec Wahlin started and pitched the first ⅔ of an inning surrendering 7 runs (3 earned) walking 5 and striking out 2. In Wahlins’ defense, the Raptors dinked and dunked a couple of infield hits and the Mustangs played shoddy defense throughout the entire game.
  • Sam Christenson came on in relief and pitched 1 ⅓ innings giving up 2 unearned runs on 1 hit and 1 walk.
  • Johan Sparks pitched 2 scoreless innings striking out 2.
  • Colby Flanagan pitched 1 ⅔ innings giving up 2 unearned runs on 3 hits striking out 1.

Defensive Highlights:

  • The Mustangs kicked the ball around today, committing 5 errors and didn’t take the “no play, no throw” credo to heart. That being said, body language stayed mostly positive and nobody mailed it in despite being down 9-2 early in the game. The boys picked each other up, didn’t point fingers and stayed mentally tough.
  • Jack Simser (LF, CF) had 4 outfield putouts in his B team debut.
  • Nolen Pederson, playing RF, dove for a sinking fly ball down the line, missing by inches; popped to his feet, chased the ball down and fired a strike to Jonah Sparks (SS) covering 2B to get the Raptor batter out trying to stretch a single into a double.

Offensive Highlights:

  • Down 12-7 in the bottom of the 7th, the Mustangs, aided by 3 errors and 2 walks, scored 6 runs for the walk off win (literally, Ike Mezzenga drew a bases loaded walk to push Jonah Sparks across for the winning run).
  • Kameron Manning went 2-3, including a HUGE 7th inning line drive single to LF with 2 on and 1 out, with 4 RBI.
  • Jack Simser had a nice B team debut at the plate going 2-4 with 2 RBI and a run scored.

Defensive Highlights:

  • Kameron Manning (LF) chased down a gapper to deep left center with 2 runners on in the 2nd, threw a strike to Mateo Cisneros (3B) who relayed a perfect throw to Cole Stenstrom (C) who held on to the ball after a home plate collision to tag out a Royal runner for the final out of the inning.
