GUIDELINES
Background
World Cancer Day takes place every year on 4th February and is the single initiative which unites the entire world in the global fight against cancer.
As the custodian of World Cancer Day, the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) develops the global campaign together with its members, partners and other stakeholders with the aim of raising general awareness of cancer worldwide.
Purpose of the world cancer day interest group (WCDIG)
The World Cancer Day Interest Group (WCDIG) has been established to create a powerful network of UICC members and partners who wish to work together to achieve the World Cancer Day objectives:
- The term ‘World Cancer Day’ is seen and heard by as many people in as many languages around the world as possible on (and around) 4th February
- Promote key global cancer messages supporting the World Cancer Declaration targets
- The Day is used as a platform for UICC and its members to expand networks, forge new partnerships and increase influence in policy areas across the cancer control continuum
- UICC Members use the Day as a platform for promoting their own activities and increasing visibility
- To raiseawareness and education about cancer
- To increase UICC's visibility
The World Cancer Day Interest Group (WCDIG) is a consultative group composed ofUICC member organisations, partners and other stakeholderseager to receive regular updates on the campaign development,
WCDIG members receive the latest updates and news on the World Cancer Day campaign through scheduledteleconferences/webinars as the campaign takes shape. The webinars present an opportunity for WCDIG members to ask questions and share comments, as well as receive the latest news and perspectives on the global fight against cancer.
Method of Working
- The World Cancer Day Interest Group will meet via teleconference, scheduled ahead of time (see proposed dates further down in this document).
- Due to time differences two meetings will be held in order to cover the various time zones – one in the morning (Geneva time - GMT+1) and one in the afternoon (Geneva time - GMT+1).
- Before each meeting an agenda will be sent to each committee member, including any relevant documentation that will be addressed in the discussion.
TIMELINE
Proposed call dates:
- Wednesday16 July2014 - During this call, we will present the 2015 campaign outline including the theme and an overview of the key messages.
- Wednesday 27 August 2014 - This call will aim at sharing an overview of the available campaign resources.
- Wednesday 11November 2014 - This call will be an opportunity to talk about the campaign implementation plans (e.g. Media Hook), share your plans to mark World Cancer Day, and for us to give you an update on the 2014 World Cancer Congress taking place in Melbourne, Australia (3-6 December).
- Wednesday 14 January 2015 - During this last call, we will give you a final overview of the 2015 World Cancer Day plans to mark the day and you will get the opportunity to share any updates on your organisations' plans.
Governance
The WCDIG is appointed and chaired by the UICC Communications Team, led by
- Caroline Perréard, Communications and Marketing Specialist
- Vanessa Von der Mühll, Head of Marketing, Communications and Web
MEMBERSHIP
Membership of the WCDIG is free and open to UICC member organisations, partners or stakeholders with an interest in World Cancer Day.
Organisations joining the WCDIG will:
- Share information, contribute ideas and work as a partner to support the World Cancer Day campaign
- Support World Cancer Day objectives
- Encourage their network(s) to support World Cancer Day
UICC will communicate regularly to WCDIG members through e-mail and teleconferences.
