I.Instructions

A.Eligibility

Current NCI scientists who serve as mentors may be nominated,with the exception of those who have received the award within the last five years. See main webpage for a list of previous winners:

Eligible categories includeinvestigators, staff scientists, staff clinicians, contractor scientists, or any NCI scientist in a position to mentor NCI fellows. Staff in all NCI Divisions (intramural and extramural) is eligible. If you are not certain whether or not someone is eligible, please e-mail

B.Review Criteria

To evaluate each nomination, the review committee will consider seven separate criteria which address the quality of the nominee’s mentoring: mentoring record, professional expertise, accessibility, communication, training environment, provision of visibility for trainees, and commitment to trainee career development. See the nomination form included here for further details.

C.Procedure

Download and save the nomination form to your computer.

Save the document as: NomineeLastName.primary.doc OR NomineeLastName.secondary.doc depending on whether you are the primary or secondary nominator (e.g., Jones.primary.doc OR Jones.secondary.doc) – where Jones refers to the mentor being nominated. Microsoft Word preferred.

Each nominee must have ONE primary and ONE secondary nomination. The primary nominator is responsible for enlisting a secondary nominator. Incomplete nominations will not be reviewed and extra nominations will not be reviewed.

The Primary nominator must be a current postdoctoralfellow, research fellow, or clinical fellow(or recent fellow, i.e., departed NIH within the last 12 months).

The Secondarynominator may be a current or former fellow or student, or other trainee with appropriate knowledge of the nominee.

Each nominator should write a narrative to address each of the criteria. Do not exceed the stated total word limit of 2000 words or your nomination will not be considered.

1.Record (underlined items are for primary nomination only): In order to establish the nominee’s mentoring record, please answer the following:

  • How many years has nominee been your mentor?
  • How many staff members does the nominee currently supervise? How many fellows?
  • How many fellows has the nominee mentored during his/her tenure at NCI? How many interns and students?
  • List placements where former fellows have gone after leaving NCI.
  • Has the nominee encouraged you to mentor others? Please describe.

If you do not have all of the above information, you may consider asking someone on the permanent staff to assist you (ALM, lab technician, AO). Otherwise, you may leave it blank.

Please address criteria 2 through 8 in 2000 words or less. Answer each criterion separately. Total word count should not exceed 2000.

2.Scientific Expertise: Does the nominee have state-of-the-science professional knowledge and expertise that they impart to trainees? Do they set a standard of scientific excellence through the quality, productivity, and impact of their research? Describe.

3.Access: Is the nominee available, accessible, and accepting of trainees in the laboratory or other research setting? Please describe.

4.Communication: Does the nominee establish explicit training expectations and provide constructive feedback, verbally and in writing, so that trainees have a gauge for learning and scientific development? Please describe.

5.Environment: Does the nominee provide a training environment conducive to good science, including intellectual and tangible support for scientific development, as well as attention to the concerns of trainees? Please describe.

6.Visibility: Does the nominee give credit to trainees, and promote visibility of their work, both formally and informally, e.g. through workshops, meetings, presentations, and publications? Please describe.
