Available Business Board Positions

Graduate Student Advisor

The Graduate Student Advisor will be responsible for offering support, guidance, and at least one program to Chapter members that will help them achieve academic success. As Graduate Student Advisor, this person will act as a pre-professional mentor and advisor to Chapter members. In addition, appropriate informal communications with the Chapter’s undergraduate membership is expected.

Time commitment: 1-2 hours/month

Department Affairs Chair

The Department Affairs Chair will be responsible for forming and maintaining relationships with faculty and other members of academic departments. They will compile a database of department contacts and maintain communication with the department contacts (note: these contacts may be men), inquire about and post department-related (e.g. research assistant positions, summer opportunities) to the website, act as a liaison with the faculty for Scientista events, identify faculty members who could serve as advisors for Scientista, keep the faculty informed of Scientista happenings (in the form of an email or newsletter), and update the lab opportunities page regularly, outreaching to department network for opportunities, posting them, and taking down filled positions. The Department Affairs Chair will work closely with the Campus Editor and Publisher to post opportunities to our Chapter website.

Time commitment: 2-3 hours/month

Events Chair

The Events Chair is responsible for spearheading social and academic events for members and working to put on events with other organizations on campus. This person would be in charge of leading the Business Board in the organization of upcoming events to the website and directing a committee as needed.

Time commitment: 3 hours/month

Diversity and Inclusion Chair

The Diversity and Inclusion Chair will be responsible for reaching out to Scientistas on our campus from historically underrepresented groups in the STEMM professions. This person will advise the Chapter about ways to develop and implement diversity and inclusion initiatives in the following three focus areas: management, our general membership, and community investment. This person will represent the interests of first-generation American Scientistas, first-generation collegian Scientistas, political refugee Scientistas, black American Scientistas, Native American Scientistas, Hispanic Scientistas, immigrant Scientistas, federal Pell grant Scientistas, and Scientistas with disabilities. The Diversity and Inclusion Chair will administer a Diversity and Inclusion Survey at the end of the academic year to assess the performance of our Chapter in the above focus areas. The Diversity and Inclusion Chair will work closely with the Chapter Director to promote diversity and inclusion within the Chapter and in our broader UMichigan women in STEM community.

Time commitment: 3 hours/month

Outreach Chair

The Outreach Chair will be in charge of promoting Scientista to the greater Ann Arbor community. This person will work closely with Events Chair to organize community outreach initiatives, volunteer opportunities, and with the Secretary to organize our Pen Pal Program.

Time commitment: 3 hours/month

Social Chair

The Social Chair will be responsible for attending other events on behalf of the MichiganScientistaChapter. They would be responsible for raising the visibility of our organization overall and networking with Scientistas from other campuses. They would finalize the calendar and work closely with the Events Chair to receive approval on the events planned and chosen with other group members. The social chair also coordinates and documents any socially oriented press coverage that MichiganScientistareceives. This might consist of photo clippings for theMichigan Dailyof organization members attending a function or local press coverage of an event put on by MichiganScientista.

Time commitment: 2 hours/month

Tutoring Chair

The Tutoring Chair will be responsible for leading theonline Scientista Forum Discussion. This person’s role will be to formally recruit (through an application process) and oversee a group of online tutors (~3 to 4) in BIO, CHEM, MATH, and PHYSICS classes. This person will also be responsible for communicating with a few professors (~6), approximately twice a year.

Time commitment: 4 hours/month

Community Relations Chair

The Community Relations Chair will be responsible for attending other women in science events on behalf of the UMichigan Scientista Chapter. They would be responsible for raising the visibility of our organization overall and networking with Scientistas from other campus groups. This is achieved through attendance at 2-3 women in science events on campus each semester, where they will share information about UMichigan Scientista. The Community Relations Chair will email the women in science event(s) this wish to attend for the upcoming month(s) to the Chapter Director at least one week in advance of the event. The Community Relations Chair will then follow-up with the Director about their attendance via a brief questionnaire. The Community Relations Chair also coordinates and documents any socially oriented press coverage that UMichigan Scientista receives. This might consist of photo clippings for the Michigan Daily of organization members attending a function or local press coverage of an event put on by UMichigan Scientista.

Time commitment: 2-3 hours/month
