Torrence Creek Elementary Profile

This narrative should include a description of student and staff demographics, recent achievement(s), and staff qualifications.

Torrence Creek Elementary is located in Huntersville, North Carolina, a suburb of the greater Charlotte area. Our current student population is 514 students in grades K-5. This is a significant change as the 2012-2013 student body was comprised of 1234 students. This reduction in students is a result of the opening of Grand Oak Elementary school which opened the fall of 2013 to relieve overcrowding here at Torrence Creek. This year our demographics are 71% White, 12% African-American, 9% Asian, 2% American Indian and 5% other. 8% of the total population has an ethnicity of Hispanic, 92% are Non-Hispanic. 3% of our students have limited English proficiency. 7% of our students are considered academically gifted and 12% are identified as students with disabilities. Approximately 15% of our students are considered economically disadvantaged this year.

This current school year, our grade levels consist of five Kindergarten classes, four first grade, four second grade, three third grade, three fourth grade classes, and three fifth grade classes. Support staff members include art, music, physical education, media, and technology as special area teachers. We also have one full time and one part time EC teacher, 60% time talent development teacher, and one academic facilitator. As part of the school’s participation in the district’s school design model, the school was able to hire the school psychologist full time in effort to provide comprehensive student service support. Torrence Creek started the Cambridge International Program in 5th grade this school year with plans to add 4th grade next year as part of the Hopewell feeder pattern. Additionally, our school welcomed two self-contained Autistic classes this year which includes two full time exceptional children’s teachers and three full time EC Teacher Assistants.

The administrative team includes the principal and one assistant principal. We have five teacher assistants available to support our instructional program. Approximately 33% of our certified staff holds an advance degree, while 15% hold national board certification (based on the most available data). The average teaching experience for our staff is approximately 10 years with 80% of our staff having five or more years of experience. The school also has a five star rated before and after school program that hosts approximately 70 students. Torrence Creek has a history of high academic performance, having achieved the status of Honor School of Excellence with High Growth from the past State ABC program and has consistently met AYP/AMO targets for all subgroups. Based on 2012-2013 and 2013-14 state EVAAS data, TCE has exceeded expected academic growth overall as a school. Torrence Creek Elementary’s performance composite for the 2013-2014 school year was 69.38% overall with 73.06% of students meeting grade level proficiency and 63.71% of the students meeting college and career ready expectations. Most recent 2014-2015 achievement indicates continuous achievement and growth, with 77.8% of students at proficient, and 70.3% at college and career ready. The North Carolina state report card has scored Torrence Creek at a grade of B for the past two school years (since the start of the grading system).
