Summer Reading Requirement – Grade 8

REQUIRED SUMMER READINGS: TESTS WILL BE GIVENTHE SECOND FULL SCHOOL WEEK.

Beginning this summer, eighth grade students are required to read one of the following books. A short description of each choice has been provided from

1. Theodore Boone – Kid Lawyer by John Grisham

In this gripping story, Theodore "Theo" Boone is a 13-year-old whose dream is to become a trial lawyer. Since his parents are both lawyers, you would expect he knows a lot about the law, which he does. He even has an office in the basement of his parents' law office, where kids from school get his advice.
When the biggest trial in the town's history is set to begin, Theo gets permission to take his class to court to watch the first day. Theo is very excited about the trial. He can't stop thinking about it and watches it every chance he has after school. He also checks the court records online.
Then Julio, a boy Theo tutors, comes to him with information about a possible witness for the trial—a very important witness that can change the verdict. Theo must then decide if he can trust this witness, and if he should bring the information he knows to the judge.

2. One for the Murphys by Lynda Mullaly Hunt

Carley uses humor and street smarts to keep her emotional walls high and thick. But the day she becomes a foster child and moves in with the Murphys, she's blindsided. This loving, bustling family shows Carley the stable family life she never thought existed and she feels like an alien in their cookie-cutter-perfect household. Despite her resistance, the Murphys eventually show her what it feels like to belong, until her mother wants her back and Carley has to decide where and how to live. She's not really a Murphy, but the gifts they've given her have opened up a new future.
