2015-2016 El Sereno Middle School Magnet

Students in grade sevenwill be practicing all major writing and reading categories: narrative, informational, and persuasive. Each section of writing includes presentations, projects, research, the opportunity to be creative, quizzes, and tests. Presentations and projects can be based on topics from English, history, science, and/or math. Students are asked to critically think, analyze, and evaluate characters, books, authors, writers, their own lives, and current events happening in their world. Reading this year is key.

There are 3major units in English Language Arts: Narrative, Informational, and Persuasive.

Within those units, students will:

Reading

  • Cite several pieces of textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.
  • Determine a central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details
  • Provide a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions or judgments
  • Analyze how particular elements of a story or drama interact (e.g., how setting shapes the characters or plot).
  • Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of rhymes and other repetitions of sounds
  • Analyze how a drama's or poem's form or structure (e.g., soliloquy, sonnet) contributes to its meaning
  • Analyze how an author develops and contrasts the points of view of different characters or narrators in a text.

Writing

  • Write informative/explanatory texts, including the narration of historical events, scientific procedures/ experiments, or technical processes.
  • Write arguments focused ondiscipline-specific content.
  • Develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach, focusing on how well purpose and audience have been addressed.
  • Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.

Students in grade seven study the social, cultural, and technological changes that occurred in Europe, Africa, andAsia in the years A. D. 500 - 1789. After reviewing the ancient world and the ways in 6th grade, students study the history and geography of great civilizations that were developing concurrently throughout the world during medieval and early modern times.

Civilizations covered:

Roman Empire

Islam in the Middle Ages.

China in the Middle Ages.
Ghana and Mali in Medieval Africa.
Medieval Japan.
Medieval Europe.
Meso-American and Andean civilizations.
Renaissance.
Reformation.
Scientific Revolution and its lasting effect on religious, political, and cultural institutions.
The Age of Exploration, the Enlightenment, and the Age of Reason

In Social Studies, students will:

  • Cite specific textual evidence to support analysis of primary and secondary sources.
  • Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
  • Identify key steps in historical process
  • Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text
  • Describe how a text presents information
  • Identify aspects of a text that reveal an author's point of view or purpose
  • Integrate visual information (e.g., in charts, graphs, photographs, videos, or maps) with other information in print and digital texts.
  • Distinguish among fact, opinion, and reasoned judgment in a text.
  • Analyze the relationship between a primary and secondary source on the same topic
  • Use Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Publisher
