AHOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE ANDERSON COUNTY COUNCIL AND THE PEOPLE OF ANDERSON COUNTY AT THE CELEBRATION OF THE SEVENTYFIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CREATION OF BROADWAY LAKE.

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased to learn that Broadway Lake has reached a milestone: seventyfive years of providing a delightful place for outdoor recreation to the citizens of Anderson County; and

Whereas, built by the Depressionera Works Progress Administration, Broadway Lake celebrated its grand opening on June 16, 1940. The new lake’s impoundment began in 1939, and when all was complete, Anderson County had gained three hundred acres of waterbased recreational enjoyment for the citizens of Anderson County; and

Whereas, Broadway Lake was created by constructing a 610foot dam where Broadway Creek and Neals Creek converged andthen flooding the surrounding farmland. Broadway Lake impounded Broadway Creek, Cupboard Creek, Pea Creek, and Neals Creek. The discharge from the dam flows into the Rocky River, which in turn flows into Lake Secession, a tributary of the Savannah River; and

Whereas, at the time of its construction, Broadway Lake was the largest lakein the Upstate of South Carolina. Designed for use in water management, Broadway Lake is controlled by a floodgate that can be opened or closed in order to raise and lower the water levels in the lake shouldthe need arise to relieve flooding in the surrounding areas; and

Whereas, four public parks, McFalls Landing, Haynie Park, Muldrow Park, and Allen Park, were built on the banks of the lake for use by the general public, which is also bordered by many private residences. The lake quickly became a popular spot for outdoor recreation in Anderson County; and

Whereas, with fishing, swimming, boating, and plenty of parkingon offer, Broadway Lake, though small, continues to draw outdoor enthusiasts. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

Thatthe members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate Anderson County Council and the people of Anderson County at the celebration of the seventyfifth anniversary of the creation of Broadway Lake.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided toAnderson County Council for the people of the Broadway Lake community.
