AHOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THECHRIST CHURCH EPISCOPAL SCHOOL GIRLS VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM, COACHES, AND SCHOOL OFFICIALS FOR AN OUTSTANDING SEASON AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM UPON WINNING THE 2015 CLASS A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE.

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased to learn that the members of the Christ Church girls basketball team of Greenville County garnered the trophy at the state championship held at the Colonial Life Arena in Columbia on Saturday, March 7, 2015; and

Whereas, the Christ Church Lady Cavaliers elatedtheir fans as they led from the tip off until the final seconds ticked off the clock to capture the state title against Latta High School; and

Whereas, Christ Church went on a 10-0 run early in the contest to lead their opponents 209 at the end of the first quarter, and the Lady Cavaliers were in control from start to finish; and

Whereas, the Lady Vikings tried to stay in the game but were unable to come any closer than eight in the second half. After Latta narrowed the gap to 38-30 in the third quarter, Christ Church scored eight unanswered points to begin the final period 46-30; and

Whereas, the Lady Cavaliers’ defense helped extend the lead to sixteen as the buzzer sounded,and Christ Church won by a final score of 61-45; and

Whereas, junior Shayla Bennett, named the Class A Player of the Year, led Christ Church with twentyone points, eight rebounds, seven assists, and three steals, while three of her teammates also scored double figures: freshman Lawren Cook with fourteen, junior Abbie Posta with ten, and the team’s only senior, Sarah Robinson,with another ten. Freshman Paula Pieperadded four points and sophomoreBailey Breazeale another two, while Posta pulled down ten boards; and

Whereas, the Lady Cavaliers’ stellar offense and defense contributed to end the season with a twentygame winning streak, an exceptional 272record, and the school’s third state title in girls basketball; and

Whereas, in a sport that demandsstrength, agility, and skill, Head Coach Toni Leopard and her accomplished coaching staff utilized their own athletic ability and training to hone a championship team and teach these athletes lessons that will prove invaluable through life both on and off the court; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives value the pride and recognition that theChrist Church basketball players have brought to their school and their community and hope to witness their continued achievements in the days ahead. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor the Christ Church Episcopal School girls varsity basketball team, coaches, and school officials for an outstanding season and congratulate them upon winning the 2015 Class A State Championship title.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Director of Upper School Pete Sanders and Coach Toni Leopard.
