2015-16 Fellows District/School Action Plan

Congratulations on becoming a WA State Fellow! We are very excited about having you be a part of our 579 strong teacher leaders. One of the expectations of being a Fellow is to collaborate with principal/district administrator to create an action plan that will facilitate change throughout your school or district. Below your will find details and expectations of each part of the plan to better facilitate your planning over the next year.

Section A:

This template should be completed with your principal/administrator as an opportunity for self-assessment and integration of Fellows work with your school/district goals for the 2015-16 School Year.

Section B:

This template should be used to support and process the action plan created by you and your principal/administrator. At the end of the 2015-16 School Year, you will share the action plan to your ESD’s regional math, science, or ELA coordinator.

Section C, Next Steps:

Following the 4th Fellows Convening, you and your principal/administrator will complete an online survey reflecting on the benefits of participating in the WA State Fellows Program.

District/School Fellow Action Plan - 2015-2016

Since spring 2013, the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) and the Association of Educational Service Districts (AESD) have collaborated to support the Washington State Fellows Network. Fellows are teacher leaders who support district implementation efforts and are a crucial component of systemic state-wide implementation efforts for the Washington State’s newest Learning Standards in mathematics (2011, Common Core State Standards), English language arts (ELA) (2011 Common Core State Standards), and science (2013 Next Generation Science Standards). The Fellows collaborate with state, regional, district, and local structures to build coherence in supporting effective implementation of the CCSS and NGSS, by focusing on shifts in instructional practice to increase student learning.

The Fellows Network has been in place for math and ELA since the 2013/14 school year, and science Fellows are being added to the Network for the 2015-16 year. Each ESD region has a cadre of math, science, and ELA Fellows who will meet three - four times a year to engage in shared learning. Across all three subjects, there is a commitment to building content learning, as well as instructional leadership. The Fellows’ work helps build capacity for state Learning Standards implementation within classrooms, schools, and districts.

In order for the Network to sustain itself and build broad teacher leader engagement, the district administrators and/or school principal (if the Fellow is a teacher) is expected to collaborate closely with their Fellow in thoughtful planning of how the district and/or school will utilize the Fellow’s leadership in support of standards implementation efforts. Each district supports its Fellow through close collaboration and a commitment to action items within the timeline as noted here:

TIMELINE / ACTION
After the first Fellows convening (occurs in Sept/Oct.) / Fellow and principal/district administrator/s create and complete the Initial Plan (Section A) of the District/School Fellow Action Plan.

The District/School Fellow Action Plan is a required component of each Fellow’s and school’s/district’s commitment.
