After taking evidence from drivers Taylor Ford(BILLABONG BERTIE) and Nicholas Brockman(PLAY APPLE TREE) Mr Brockman pleaded guilty to a charge under AR 163(1)(a) in that he attempted to shift ground on the home turn and as a result of his attempt to shift BILLABONG BERTIE both horse locked wheels, resulting in BILLABONG BERTIE being checked and PLAY APPLE TREE breaking. Stewards queried driver Ricky Duggan, in relation to the driving tactics adopted on OUR CHAIN OF COMMAND NZ during the event. Mr Duggan stated that racing into the back straight on the final occasion he elected to take a run on the peg line with a view to then being able to shift out from inside GAMBLERS RUSTLER as he was of the view that by pulling out in the back straight he would then be shifted out four and five wide as GAMBLERS RUSTLER and MAYBE DOC commenced runs. On the home turn he was able to get to a position three wide on the back of MAYBE DOC and then was unable to obtain a clear run until close to the finish. Mr Duggan also stated that he is of the view that the gelding is now best suited when held up for one run and advised that connections intend to drive the gelding in this manner in similar circumstances. Stewards noted Mr Duggan’s explanation.

Stewards queried trainer Zeke Slater as to the apparent improved performance of GREYSTEEL. Mr Slater advised that after being stood down to trials at the geldings last start on August 17 he had rectified a number of issues with the gelding and that the gelding had trialled well leading up to tonights event.

After working three wide in the middle stages to a position outside the leader, KARALTA DAZZLER then tired to be beaten 39 metres. Stewards queried trainer Kent Rattray and driver John Walters as to the performance of the gelding in this event. Mr Rattray stated that in his view the horse was up in class and after showing gate speed then did some work early to obtain a run outside the leader, during which quick early sectionals were recorded. A post race veterinary examination of KARALTA DAZZLER failed to reveal any apparent abnormalities. Stewards accepted the explanation of trainer Kent Rattray and driver John Walters.

After showing gait speed and leading, DEE BEE BOBBY then tired over the concluding stages.

Stewards queried driver Ricky Duggan (MAJOR CALLUM NZ) as to the reasons why he drove the gelding in a more aggressive manor in tonight’s event. Mr Duggan advised that at the gelding’s previous start he had been unable to shift three wide on the home turn due to the gelding hanging however the gelding was more tractable with a lugging pole on tonight. Mr Duggan stated that the gelding only ran to the line fairly over the concluding stages. Stewards noted Mr Duggan’s explanation.
