Florida CEC Liaison / March 1, 2013
Dear Colleagues,
It is with great pleasure that the Florida Division on Career Development and Transition (FLDCDT) announces a partnership with the National Secondary Transition Technical Assistance Center (NSTTAC) and the Florida Department of Education/Bureau of Exceptional Education and Student Services (FLDOE/BEES) for this year’s VISIONS XX Conference/Institute. This partnership will enable participants at the Conference/Institute to gather information on evidenced-based practices for providing transition services to students with disabilities and to plan together to implement new and innovative practices back home. Through this collaborative effort, additional funds will be available for school district teams to attend this event. However, it is not a requirement that participants be a part of a team to attend the conference.
Take a look at the attached tentative agenda and, notice that there will be several concurrent sessions scheduled during team planning for those individuals that are not associated directly with a school district team. There will also be several opportunities throughout the Conference/Institute when all participants will come together (i.e., Keynote Speakers, Awards Luncheon, President’s Receptions, etc.) Please refer to the final page of the registration form for questions regarding teams’ participation. It is strongly encouraged that teams be composed of a representative several transition stakeholder groups from your district. If you would like more information regarding a team from your area, it is suggested that you contact your local school district’s Exceptional Student Education Director or Transition Specialist/Contact.
Questions regarding the format and schedule of events for the Conference should be directed to Debra Oistacher, , (754)321-5217.
I look forward to receiving your registration.

District Teams: An Overview

1. What is the purpose of District Teams?

The team concept is one major difference between a typical conference, in which participants attend as “individuals” and the “institute model” through Florida DCDT’s partnership with the Bureau of Exceptional Education and Student Support (BEESS) and the National Secondary Transition Technical Assistance Center (NSTTAC), which fosters teamwork for planning improvements for students with disabilities transitioning into postsecondary environments.

2. Who should be members of a District Team?

Essential to this process is team membership that includes educators and other individuals with diverse knowledge who can affect or modify policy, initiate change, and take responsibility for implementation of the team’s plan subsequent to the institute. Examples of team members include the following:

  • District Exceptional Student Education (ESE) staff, such as Director, Transition Contact, or Student Services
  • Postsecondary Education’s (PSE’s) Students with Disabilities Support Services Coordinators from the local College or University, or ESE Teachers from local Career and Technical Education (CTE) Centers,Adult agency service providers, such as personnel from Vocational Rehabilitation (VR), Association for Persons with Disabilities (APD), or Florida Developmental Disabilities Council (FDDC)
  • Discretionary Project personnel, such a transition contacts from Florida Diagnostic Learning and Resource Services (FDLRS), The Multiagency Network for Students with Emotional/Behavioral Disabilities (SEDNET), or Florida Inclusion Network (FIN)

3. What are the advantages of sending a District Team to the conference?

  • Increased knowledge of team members and facilitation of the application of that knowledge in their local context
  • Access to guided planning process during conference
  • Access to facilitators andcontent experts, based upon local needs
  • Financial assistance for travel costs from BEESS/Project 10 for districts that send a team

4. What are the expectations for District Teams?

  • Attend conference presentations
  • Attend daily facilitated team planning meetings and use the planning tool provided by NSTTAC to develop a local plan
  • Report to larger group on the final day of conference
  • Upon returning to district, implement plan and evaluate effectiveness
