2013 Regional Contest

Coordinator Notes

The contest criteria were drawn from the CTE Curriculum Standards for the Wood and Wood Products Industry with emphasis in Cabinetmaking.

The core elements to be tested are:

  1. Planning and Layout – will include exercise in plan reading, estimating and cost calculations. It will include a written and hands-on activity.
  1. Materials processing and assembly – will involve layout, cutting and assembling a typical project representative of the cabinetmaking industry.
  1. Tool handling and techniques – contestants will demonstrate their ability to safely use, care and transport hand tools and portable power tools.

Description

There are two components to the contest:

  1. Bill of Materials (written test):

Contestants will have one hour to prepare a material list of a case with drawer and a top (reading drawings). They will need to make two copies of the Bill of Materials, one to be turned in and graded and the other used by the contestant.

  1. Case and drawer construction:

For this contest the contestants will have three hours to build a small cabinet with a drawer and top. They will need to know how to use a biscuit jointer*, a pocket hole jig, miter saw and small hand tools. They will also need to know how to optimize materials for the best yield. Each contestant will receive the following materials:

  • 1 pc - ¾” x 12” x 96” sheet stock for case parts
  • 1 pc - ¼” x 14” x 36” sheet stock for back and bottom
  • 1 pc - 1”x 8” x 4’ #2 pine for drawer and top build-up

*NOTE: Joinery type is subject to contest coordinator’s discretion. May use biscuits or spline or other joinery.

Contest Requirements

  1. Tools Required for Contest (provided by Organizers):
  • Table saw
  • Power miter saw
  • Kreg/pocket hole jig
  • Biscuit jointers*
  • Router with ¼” rabbeting bit

*NOTE: Joinery type is subject to contest coordinator’s discretion. May use biscuits or spline or other joinery.

  1. Materials Required for Contest (provided by Organizers):
  • #2 Pine* 1” x 8” x 8’ – 2 students per piece (OR #2 Pine 1” x 8” x 16’ – 4 students per pc)
  • ¾” x 4’ x 8’ sheet stock/plywood* – 3 students per sheet
  • ¼” x 4’ x 8’ sheet stock/plywood* – 6 students per sheet

*NOTE: the material types are suggestions, less expensive versions can be substituted.

  • Face frame screws 1-1/4” – 18 pcs per student
  • #20 biscuits – 18 pcs per student
  • 4P finish nails 1-1/4” – 24 pcs per student (approx.)
  • Yellow woodworker’s glue
