  • March 21-24, 2013 we held our annual Spring Conference at University Plaza Hotel and Convention Center in Springfield, MO. The theme for this year’s conference was Drawing on 21st Century Skills: Embracing and Advancing Art Education. Our Keynote speaker was Dr. Robert Sabol from NAEA who spoke on current national topics in art education. We also had a special session speaker, Dr. Paul Sproll from RISD, sponsored by University of Missouri St. Louis, who spoke on Design in Art. Again our conference participation increased from spring 2012 with 304 attendees, to spring 2013 with 340 registered.
  • On March 26, 2013 we celebrated Youth Art Month with the annual YAM Awards and Recognition ceremony at the State Capitol. The work was on display March 12-26 at the Capitol. First Lady, Georganne Nixon spoke to the crowd of over 1200 and took photographs with all of the students attending the event. Local television station covered the event for the first time this year.
  • The MAEA newsletter/magazine, Show Me Art, is published twice a year and features artists/teachers, interviews with well-known artists, lesson plans, council reports, and much more.
  • In conjunction with the Missouri Alliance for Arts Education, MAEA’s own Rebecca Moppin is providing a workshop entitled: Common Core For Non-Tested Subjects and Grades; March 21, Springfield (Springfield Art Museum) & March 29, St. Louis (Webster University)

Association Work on NAEA Strategic Plan Initiatives:

  • July 23-24, 2013 Summer Council Meeting—now includingworkshops on technology, leadership, and art workshops in addition to the business meeting.

Community—build a professional community:

  • We have started utilizing Eventbrite for conference promotional items, like T-shirts.
  • Also added a scheduling app similar to the one NAEA uses through Guidebook for Fall 2012 and Spring 2013 conferences. Increased from 25 downloads for fall conference, to 195 downloads at spring conference.
  • Student Co-Liaisons set up a space at every conference specifically for student members and First Five teachers to make them feel welcome and answer any questions they may have.
  • Regular reminders go out on our listserve, ArtBytes, reminding members of how to sign up for District or Division Blogs so they can stay informed.

Research/Knowledge—assess programs/services and provide access to information on policy:

  • We have started utilizing a paid SurveyMonkey account to evaluate conferences. We can then assess the data and make changes based on member needs and feedback.
  • We have also started using SurveyMonkey to conduct MAEA business such as polls or input from council, executive council votes, nominations for elections and awards, conference proposals, etc. Great tool and worth the yearly fee for the upgraded version.
  • We have also created a Survey to collect conference workshop proposals, based on the NAEA proposal, but also incorporating the Missouri Teacher Quality Standards published by our Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
  • Website updated and monitored: all official MAEA documents have been posted including minutes from meetings since summer 2012.

Advocacy—communicate the value of visual arts:

  • Youth Art Month Exhibit on display at state capitol March 12-26 (one week longer than last year)
  • Youth Art Month Awards and Recognition ceremony March 26 had local television coverage for the first time!
  • YAM committee contacted all legislators with list of YAM participants and invited them to the event.
  • MAEA is a member of the Missouri Alliance for Arts Education
